Those who have touched by this disease as a survivor, a friend, a loved one, or a caregiver, healthcare provider, etc.– find that dance truly can make a difference in the quality of their life and in assisting in their recovery. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we dedicate this post to all of those in this battle as we note the ways ballroom dancing can provide comfort and help to breast cancer survivors:
- Dance provides emotional support. Breast cancer survivors have been through diagnosis, treatment and a recovery that can be arduous. At such times, a supportive community of friends and family eases the stresses. Ballroom dance is an easy and fun way to make lifelong friends who will be there for you through the good times as well as the bad.
- Dance restores self-confidence. Many breast cancer survivors have undergone changes to their body, be they from chemotherapy sessions, mastectomies, breast reconstruction or other surgeries. This can be traumatic physically and emotionally and damaging to one’s self-image, especially for women who have had to lose their hair or breasts. Dancing can bring that confidence back and make you feel stronger, comfortable in your body and capable of anything!
- Dance is a fun way to relieve stress and get your mind onto a positive track. Through dance, breast cancer survivors often discover a fun way to feel good. They’re able to simply relax and enjoy the music and the movement. Any type of exercise can be a stress-buster, but nothing beats letting loose and enjoying the moment on the dance floor.
- Dance allows you to embark upon a physical fitness regimen at your own pace. Cancer and its treatment may save your life, but they leave the body damaged. Many breast cancer survivors can’t resume their former fitness routines where they left off before their illness. Recovery takes time and it can often be a slow, frustrating journey back to wellness. Ballroom dance is a form of exercise that can be as easy or as challenging as you make it. You dance at your own pace and regain your strength in an encouraging environment.
This month, we hope to help in bringing breast cancer awareness to communities across the nation and we welcome breast cancer survivors – and everyone who’s been touched by this disease (friends, family members, co-workers, caregivers, healthcare providers etc.) – to discover the healing power of dance.
