A Day in the Studio

February 26, 2018

A day in the life of our dance studio – it’s always evolving.

The studio opens at 10 o’clock in the morning. Megan arrives and starts answering phones and organizing the day’s lessons for our instructors.

Sometimes, lessons begin at 10, sometimes at 11. Students come in before lunch.

Every day at 1 o’clock, we have our staff meeting, where we sit down and talk not only about the schedule of the day, what’s happening tomorrow and the next week and the next month, but we also do training of our teachers on communication issues, how to work with students, because everybody learns differently.

At our staff meeting, we sometimes do video training, sometimes role playing. For 45 minutes every day, teachers are required to attend, to deepen their knowledge and expertise.

From 1:45 to 10 p.m., they’re teaching lots of lessons, and we are busy.

Every evening at 7:45 p.m., there’s a group dance lesson, Monday through Thursday. Fridays are our dance parties.

It’s great owning the studio with my wife. I usually wake up and start my work at 7:30, 8 a.m. from home online, check what’s going on, check emails. I look at social media, scour marketing opportunities.

I don’t usually get in to the studio until 10 or 11 a.m. Lada arrives around noon, and we trade off during the day.

By 5 or 6 p.m., I’ll head home to take care of our dogs. She stays at the studio until 10 and closes up.

In between, I set my agenda of different things I want to accomplish. Other things pop up during the day – phone calls from studios around the country wanting to know about marketing, teachers wanting to do different things, students walking in, people contacting me about the business.

There’s never a dull moment when you’re in a business you love.
