Each one a unique tale. A special moment. A forever memory they fondly recall. This is the story of one such memory, shared with me during a recent marketing meeting with our PR team. We were at a family wedding in southern California. A wedding filled with love and laughter, relatives from near and far, and plenty of stories that made my older aunts and uncles shake with delight.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath the bright and twinkling lights of the dance floor, my dad took my hands and offered me one of my fondest memories.<\/p>\n<p>At age 19, slow dances for me consisted of shuffling around the dance floor. Unsure movements. Awkward moments. Boys my age would gingerly sway back and forth. My dad moved with grace, rhythm, and expertise.<\/p>\n<p>It was fun.<\/p>\n<p>It was effortless.<\/p>\n<p>He commanded the dance and in one fell swoop, I understood <em>the why<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The why behind my parent\u2019s ballroom dance lessons.<\/p>\n<p>I remember scoffing at my mom and dad when they would go to their weekly lessons. \u201cWhy on earth would anyone want to ballroom dance,\u201d I thought. Growing up in the age of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pua9UszdO24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Roger Rabbit,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lYpRasK4c9k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Running Man<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=otCpCn0l4Wo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hammer Time<\/a>, I never understood my parents&#8217; love of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Sinatra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Sinatra<\/a>. Of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QEdPe1SxitI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moon River<\/a>. Of music from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0049408\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the King and I<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I never understood the look that passed between them when they had the opportunity to dance. The twinkle in my dad\u2019s eye. Vinyl scattered across the record player. Men and women in suits and gowns, sipping whisky and wine. Enjoying each song, each moment.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back now, as a woman in my 40s, I understand.<\/p>\n<p>I understand that for my parents of five children, dance gave them an escape. For my mom, fearlessly battling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/bloomfield-hills\/blog\/benefits-working-charities\/\">cancer<\/a>, it was an opportunity to momentarily forget. And for my dad, it was a way of leading the show, of remaining in control of a life that must have seemed to spiral out of his reach so often.<\/p>\n<p>Dance gave them something to have fun with, something to replace the mundane, the monthly treatments, the stress.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/bloomfield-hills\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/06\/IMG_4220-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/bloomfield-hills\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/06\/IMG_4220-1-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/bloomfield-hills\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/06\/IMG_4220-1-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/bloomfield-hills\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/06\/IMG_4220-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a>One of my favorite songs is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RV-Z1YwaOiw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <em>I Hope You Dance\u00a0<\/em>by Lee Ann Womack<\/a>. Its lyrics include:<\/p>\n<p><em>Promise me that you&#8217;ll give faith a fighting chance<br \/>\nAnd when you get the choice to sit it out or dance<br \/>\n<\/em><em>I hope you dance<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to think this was my parents&#8217; wish for us. And this is my wish for my two children.<\/p>\n<p>Now in his 80s, my dad moves around with a walker for assistance. His dancing days are over, but I continue to hold onto the memories of him dancing. With my mom. With <strong>me<\/strong>. I now recognize the importance of that moment.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time my dad danced after her passing. And it was the first time I really and truly danced.<\/p>\n<p>Under the twinkling lights that evening, we moved around the dance floor with purpose. With rhythm.
