What Is the Foxtrot?

The Foxtrot is a classic American dance style, often associated with glamorous ballrooms and the fun of the flapper era. The dance originated in New York City early in the 20th century and is commonly believed to be named after Harry Fox, a vaudeville performer who was perhaps the first to use the “slow step” that characterizes the Foxtrot. This style became hugely popular during the 1910s and 1920s, spreading across the country’s ballrooms and onto the global stage.

The Foxtrot is a smooth, progressive dance that slowed down the tempo of the One-Step and combined it with elements of the Tango. The gliding motions and slower pace made it a natural fit for the jazz music that defined dance culture during the early 20th century. The Foxtrot became further engrained in popular culture when it featured in movies like Top Hat, dance by the iconic duo of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

The popularity of the Foxtrot marked a new era in ballroom dance, as partners danced much closer together and were more expressive than was typical in previous dance eras. Unlike the Polka, Waltz, and One-Step – in which dancers held each other at arm’s length and moved in a set pattern – the Foxtrot features a closer hold and dancers are able to improvise steps and movements along with the music.

The basic rhythm of the Foxtrot is slow-slow-quick-quick. It is a simple but elegant style that is adaptable to a wide variety of music, adding to its enduring popularity over the last century. While the steps are simple to learn, dancers elevate the movements through their precision and poise, creating a unique style that is captivating to watch and a lot of fun to dance!

Is the Foxtrot the Same as the Foxy?

As we’ve learned, the Foxtrot is a smooth, progressive dance that has couples traveling across the dance floor.

The Foxy is a slowed down, romantic variation of the Foxtrot. This slow dance is easy to learn and allows dancers to travel across the floor or stay more stationary. Its approachability and flexibility makes the Foxy a popular choice for couples on their wedding day!

Not sure which style is right for you? You don’t have to pick! You’ll find both Foxtrot and Foxy lessons on the calendar at Fred Astaire Boise.
