Sia Haiti che la Repubblica Dominicana rivendicano il Merengue come loro. Secondo la tradizione haitiana, un precedente sovrano del loro paese aveva un figlio zoppo a cui piaceva ballare. Affinch\u00e9 questo amato principe non si sentisse imbarazzato per la sua afflizione, l\u2019intero popolo prese a ballare come se fossero tutti zoppi. La versione del domenicano \u00e8 che il ballo abbia avuto origine in una festa che \u00e8 stata data per onorare un eroe di guerra di ritorno. Quando il valoroso guerriero si alz\u00f2 per ballare, zoppic\u00f2 sulla gamba sinistra ferita. Piuttosto che farlo sentire imbarazzato, tutti gli uomini presenti hanno preferito zoppicare sulle loro gambe sinistre mentre ballavano.<\/p>

In both countries for many generations, the Merengue was taught and danced with these back stories in mind. When couples got up to dance the Merengue, the man favored his left leg and the lady favored her right leg; while flexing their knees a bit more than usual and at the same time leaning the body slightly to the same side. Haitians and Dominicans alike refer to the Merengue as their \u201csinging dance;\u201d this is understandable when you consider the exhilarating brightness of the staccato rhythm. The Merengue is danced in place to Latin music.<\/p>
