Discover the Lindy Hop Roots of East Coast Swing

East Coast Swing grew from the broader family of American swing dances, with strong ties to Lindy Hop and the energetic dance culture that flourished in Harlem. During the 1930s and 1940s, dancers developed new steps and styling alongside the music of major swing-era bands.

The history behind this dance helps explain its lively feel. The Library of Congress documents Frankie Manning’s role in Lindy Hop at Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom and his influence on swing dancing. That legacy of improvisation, musical response, and social connection continues to shape the style today.

As East Coast Swing evolved, dancers worked with single, double, and triple rhythms. Those variations helped make the dance adaptable to different tempos and gave students multiple ways to interpret the music.
