Make Sure You Do This Stretch Everyday!

Oct. Blog - StretchingYou may love your job, but if it requires a lot of sitting at a desk in front of a computer, you could be feeling the effects of those long hours.

All the sitting can lead to tightness in the hips and legs. You probably know you should be taking periodic stretching breaks just to loosen the tension, but the accumulation of hours spent in office chairs can make a person miserable.

Dance can be the perfect remedy to these problems. Not only will dance provide an emotional release and social interaction with others away from the rigors of the office, it will promote physical fitness and flexibility.

Your Fred Astaire Dance Studio can teach you a lot about the value of warmups and stretches. Getting loose and limber frees not only the body but the mind.

Here’s a great stretch you can do after your dance lessons or at home (or at the office!).

THE BUTTERFLY STRETCH: This simple stretch engages the groin and inner thigh. Sit on the floor with feet flat to the ground. Let your knees fall to the sides and press the soles of your feet together. Grab your heels and gently pull them as close to your groin as you can without pain or discomfort. While keeping your back straight, slowly bounce the knees up and down to stretch these tight muscles. Count to 10 while doing this. Then press your elbows gently into your knees and push them toward the ground for 10 seconds. This stretch will help remedy the effects of long sessions in the office chair.

Keep dancing! Stay flexible. Come and dance and stretch with us at Fred Astaire Franchised Dance Studios.
