7 Things To Know Before Starting Dancing the Waltz<\/b><\/h2>\n

1. The Waltz Is Beginner-Friendly<\/b><\/h3>\n

The waltz may look elegant and complex, but beginners learn the basics much faster than they expect. The rhythm follows a clear <\/span>three-beat structure<\/b>, which makes it easy to feel the timing.<\/span><\/p>\n

We start waltz dance lessons with posture work and a simple box step.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Basic Waltz Steps You\u2019ll Learn First<\/b><\/h4>\n
The Box Step\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n

This is the basic step we teach at our dance studio in Tucson, as it helps new students feel the classic <\/span>1-2-3 pattern<\/b>. The leader starts with the left foot and executes a forward half box, followed by a backward half box. The follower performs the opposite \u2013 she starts with the right foot and executes a backward half box, followed by a forward half box.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turning Box Step<\/b><\/h5>\n

Once comfortable, dancers progress to the turning box step. This is where the <\/span>basic box pattern begins to rotate gradually<\/b>\u2014about 1\/4 to the left on each half-box, completing a 3\/4 turn over one full box. Smooth rotation is guided by the leader’s upper body using contra body movement, so you still dance the familiar box, but now you turn gracefully while dancing it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Underarm Turn<\/b><\/h5>\n

It adds expression and connection, allowing partners to create <\/span>elegant shapes and gentle rotation<\/b> while keeping the same timing structure. Most students love this step in our waltz dance classes because it feels like real dancing.<\/span><\/p>\n
