Mathew Heggem – Dance Instructor

Mathew’s professional career in the arts spans 15 years as a dance maker, performer, curator and producer, living predominantly in New York City and touring up & down the East Coast. Originally from Bellingham, Washington, where he started in musical theater & ballet, Mathew is currently an Alexandria, VA based artist & curator. He received his Bachelor’s Degree, with a concentration in choreography & performance, from Goucher College, MD.; and, nearing graduation, received national recognition by the American College Dance Festival (ACDFA) for “Best Performer” at the Kennedy Center, in Washington, D.C. After completing his education, Mathew relocated to NYC to develop his career in the arts, where he performed with such artist as Nicholas Leichter, Jennifer Monson, Wendell Cooper, Clyde Forth, and Adrienne Clancy. As part of his on stage, he had the opportunity to perform at such reputable venues as The Joyce, Joe’s Pub, PS122, City Center, The Ailey Theater, and Dance Theater Workshop, as well as DC’s vary own Dance Place. In addition, through his own work as a dance maker & arts producer, Mathew has presented work at the Baltimore Theater Project, Dixon Place, The Tank, Arts On Site, the Center for Performance Research, Triskelion, and various festivals between DC and Boston. He has been a guest artist at the Goucher Summer Arts Institute, Experimental Movement Concepts, Trinity College’s LaMaMa Summer Arts program, and various institutions throughout the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. While in NYC, Mathew also received a 2 year certification in The Feldenkrais Method’s “Awareness Through Movement®.”
