We\u2019re named for him and you may be able to name his movies and his more famous partners like Ginger Rogers, but here are some things you may not know about Fred Astaire:<\/p>\n
He started dancing<\/strong> for a very pragmatic reason. You may know that Fred Astaire began dancing professionally in 1905 with his sister, Adele. But then he started dance lessons for a reason every mother will understand.<\/p>\n His sister<\/strong> was taking dance lessons and his Mom didn\u2019t want to have to pay for a babysitter so she sent Fred, too.<\/p>\n His first screen test<\/strong> wasn\u2019t an overwhelming success. He was given the following evaluation. \u201cCan\u2019t act. Can\u2019t sing. Balding. Can dance a little.\u201d Turned out he could dance a lot!<\/p>\n A guest appearance<\/strong> you may have missed \u2013 Fred appears on the sleeve of The Beatles\u2019 Sgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Would seem he had fans in jolly ol\u2019 England, too.<\/p>\n Cyd Charisse\u2019s husband<\/strong> recounted that he would always know who Cyd had been dancing with. Bruises? She\u2019d been hitting the floor with the physically-demanding Gene Kelly. No bruises? She\u2019d been dancing with the smooth and agile Fred Astaire.<\/p>\n A musical instrument?<\/strong> What instrument would you guess that Fred played? Something as smooth or versatile as\u00a0he was? Would you guess the accordion? Bring on that polka!<\/p>\n Nailed it<\/strong> on the first take. When Fred Astaire made a cameo in John Lennon and Yoko Ono\u2019s film, Imagine, they were thrilled with his first take. He wasn\u2019t. He was sure he could do better and asked to try again.<\/p>\n He and Gene Kelly<\/strong> danced together one time. Not counting the compilation movie, That\u2019s Entertainment, Part II, Gene and Fred only shared one single dance. The routine was titled “The Babbitt\u00a0and The Bromide,” and was in the 1948 movie, Ziegfeld Follies.<\/p>\n A signature move<\/strong> concealed what Fred thought was a fault. When he was dancing and his arms were outstretched he curled his middle two fingers in. Why? He thought it disguised his very large hands.<\/p>\n He may have tried to hide his hands, but he could never hide his talent. And, he taught the world to love dance.
