With the spring theater season coming to an end, all were lined up to see who would take home an award from the prestigious 33rd Annual Fred and Adele Astaire Awards. Originally founded in 1982, the awards have been a showcase of talent, rewarding dancers and choreographers alike who have shown skill and excellence on the Broadway stage.<br \/>\nEighteen nominated dancers attended the awards ceremony last night, many of whom had performed in Broadway hits such as \u201cAn American in Paris,\u201d \u201cOn the Twentieth Century,\u201d \u201cOwn the Town,\u201d \u201cThe King and I\u201d and \u201cFinding Neverland.\u201d Eight nominated choreographers attended as well, some for their great work in \u201cAn American in Paris\u201d and \u201cOn the Twentieth Century\u201d as well, along with others for their work in \u201cSomething Rotten!\u201d and \u201cThe Last Ship.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In a surprising turn of events, \u201cAn American in Paris\u201d and \u201cOn the Town\u201d nearly stole the entire show, featuring five award winners, with Best Male Dancer and Best Choreographer resulting in a tie! The winners from last night\u2019s ceremony are as follows: <\/p>\n<p>Best Female Dancer: Leanne Cope &#8211; \u201cAn American in Paris\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is Cope\u2019s sixth nomination she has ever received for An American in Paris and her first win.<br \/>\nCope\u2019s award winning performance was for her portrayal of Lise Dassin.<\/p>\n<p>Best Male Dancer: Tony Yazbeck &#8211; \u201cOn the Town\u201d and Robert Fairchild &#8211; \u201cAn American in Paris\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is Yazbek\u2019s second Astaire Award nomination and his first win. He was inspired to dance after watching Fred Astaire on TV at age 4 and began his career as a newsboy  in \u201cGypsy\u201d at age 11. <\/p>\n<p>Fairchild has performed \u201cAn American in Paris\u201d in Paris and on Broadway. He is also the recipient of the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise.<\/p>\n<p>Best Choreographer: Joshua Bergasse &#8211; \u201cOn the Town\u201d and Christopher Wheeldon &#8211; \u201cAn American in Paris&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bergasse is also known for his Emmy Award winning work for NBC\u2019s \u201cSmash.\u201d He has also performed in Broadway hits such as \u201cMovin\u2019 Out,\u201d \u201cHairspray,\u201d \u201cThe Life\u201d and \u201cWest Side Story.\u201dWheeldon\u2019s inspiration for the choreography for \u201cAn American in Paris\u201d is based on a concert of George and Ira Gershwin music he attended when he was 7. <\/p>\n<p>Best Choreography in a Feature Film: Akram Khan &#8211; \u201cDesert Dancer\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his long career, Khan has also been awarded The Laurence Olivier Award, The International Society for the Performing Arts Distinguished Artist Award, six Critic\u2019s circle National Dance Awards and many others. <\/p>\n<p>The awards ceremony also took a moment to honor two great gentlemen of Broadway. Joel Gray, an actor, playwright, director and producer, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his amazing career. Harvey Weinstein, co-founder of The Weinstein Company, Dimensions Films and Miramax Films, was honored for Outstanding Contribution to Musical Theatre and Film.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/mamaroneck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/140\/2015\/06\/102901.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/mamaroneck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/140\/2015\/06\/102901-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"102901\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2854\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several professionals from Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Connecticut had the opportunity to participate in the awards ceremony, including (From left to right) Jennifer Kirksmith, Anastasia Barhatova, Ecaterina Liubenco, Ashley Mokris and Anastasia Zhitova.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/mamaroneck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/140\/2015\/06\/JKC_150601_0172-300x221.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fredastaire.com\/mamaroneck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/140\/2015\/06\/JKC_150601_0172-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"JKC_150601_0172-300x221\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2855\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThis grand showcase was made possible by Patricia Watt and The Douglass Watt Family Fund for the Performing Arts, a charitable fund for the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards and the creators of a Dance\/Movement Therapy program for New York public schools.  <\/p>\n<p>Note: Fred Astaire Dance Studio Chairman Jack Rothweiler is a board member for the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dancers and choreographers walked the red carpet last night at the NYU Skirball Center, all in anticipation for the night to come.
