Humans have told stories with their bodies since the beginning of time. Across ancient civilizations\u2014from the rhythmic ceremonial movements of early African tribes to the Haka of the M\u00e3ori in New Zealand\u2014dance was a language, a means of storytelling, emotional expression and communal bonding. It was how people celebrated, mourned, connected and even healed.<\/p>

While dance has evolved through centuries, its fundamental purpose remains unchanged. Today, we may dance for fun, for fitness or to celebrate our most joyous occasions. But dance still fulfills those deeper human needs. The Fred Astaire Dance Studios opened a new location in New Canaan.<\/div>
The dance studio, located on 111 Main St., offers lessons in international and American ballroom styles, including wedding dance lessons.<\/div>
A grand opening on Friday featured live performances and complimentary lessons.<\/div>
“When you’re dancing, your focus is all in the dancing. You cannot be anywhere else,” says Amy Cherrez, owner of the Fred Astaire Dance Studios. “You concentrate just in the dancing, the steps, learning everything that you’re doing, having fun. It’s so, to the mind, that brings extra. You know, exercising. Extra everything that we need”.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Marko Micic and Amy Cherrez\u2014natives of Serbia and Ecuador, respectively, and lifelong dancers who became professionals before coming to the United States\u2014met in May 2023 while each of them worked for different studios.<\/span><\/p>

The two began dancing together, developed a relationship and started to talk about launching a business.<\/p>

\"\"\u201cWe both had an interest in owning something that was ours,\u201d Micic said.<\/p>

Now they do.<\/p>

Two weeks ago, the New Haven couple\u2019s vision became a reality when Cherrez and Micic opened\u00a0Fred Astaire Dance Studios New Canaan<\/a>\u00a0at 111 Main St., a second-floor space formerly occupied by the Caren Forbes store.<\/p>

\u201cIt feels really good,\u201d Micic told\u00a0NewCanaanite.com<\/i>. \u201cIt\u2019s busy. We have to prepare everything that we have to set up so that we can do these classes. Everything is going fast and we are excited. It\u2019s like a roller coaster, you\u2019re there and then it\u2019s just going and you have to go with it.\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
