Hustle is fast, smooth, and full of personality, making it a great choice for adults who want to move confidently to upbeat music. At Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Old Town Scottsdale, our instructors help students develop timing, balance, turns, and comfortable partner connection in a welcoming environment. Whether you are new to dancing or adding another social style to your repertoire, lessons can be shaped around your goals and experience.

Part of what makes this dance so enjoyable is the way it blends speed with flow. Partners can rotate, travel, open into turns, and reconnect with ease, creating a polished look that feels equally at home with disco favorites and contemporary pop tracks.

Discover the New York Disco Roots of Hustle

The dance grew from the vibrant nightclub culture of New York City during the 1970s, when young social dancers were experimenting with touch dancing, freestyle movement, and new partner patterns. The New York Public Library documents its development in 1970s discos and its early roots among Puerto Rican teens.

As Hustle evolved, dancers incorporated ideas from mambo, cha-cha, swing, and smooth ballroom. Multiple turns, hand changes, rotational movement, and flowing arm actions gave the dance a more polished and recognizable character.

By the late 1970s, Hustle had moved beyond club floors into studios, competitions, and performances. Different timing approaches appeared, while New York dancers helped popularize the fast three-count rhythm that became closely associated with the style.

Build Hustle Timing, Turns, and Partner Connection

A strong Hustle foundation starts with rhythm, balance, and clear communication between partners. Beginners can first learn comfortable weight changes and basic timing before moving into turns, directional changes, and more detailed combinations.

During your lessons in Old Town Scottsdale, our instructors can help students refine posture, hand connections, foot placement, turning technique, and smooth transitions. Each skill can be introduced gradually so dancers gain control without losing the fun and energy of the music.

As your Hustle skills grow, quicker turns, flowing arm movements, directional changes, and musical accents can add more personality to your dancing. These details help create the smooth, continuous quality that makes the style so exciting to watch and perform.

Bring Disco Style Into Today’s Social Scene

Hustle may be closely connected to the disco era, but its adaptability keeps it relevant on modern dance floors. Its energetic, flowing movement works well with many pop, dance, and club tracks, giving students a social style they can enjoy with music they already know.

Learning Hustle can also strengthen timing, coordination, balance, partner awareness, and turning control. These skills can support progress in other ballroom and rhythm dances while helping students feel more comfortable in social settings.
