Salsa & Bachata Dance Classes

Dance is movement. Sometimes it keeps to a slower pace, but it can also explode in a joy that is almost frenzied.

That’s why we love two of those fast-paced dances – salsa and bachata. They’re up-tempo, invigorating and perfect for a party atmosphere.

Your Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Pearland teaches salsa and bachata, and we urge you to join us for classes in both! You’ll have a blast, and the pace provides quite a workout. These dances are growing in popularity among millennials.

Both are 8-beat dances, with bachata moving in a square. The dance originated in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s, but the speed at which it is danced has quickened over time. It can be danced in a closed or open position.

Salsa has Afro-Cuban folk roots, but truly shot to popularity in New York in the 1970s. It has a bit of mambo, rumba and cha-cha to it. The basic salsa rhythm calls for taking three steps for every four beats of music. And we’re talking about music with upwards of 150 beats per minute! Salsa will really get you moving!

Latin dances will also incorporate a variety of different upper-body movements. Various regions around the world (Cuba, Los Angeles, New York) also have stylistic variances. L.A. style is influenced by elements of the tango and Latin hustle, while New York keeps the dancers close together in a tighter space.
