Discover the Harlem Heritage of East Coast Swing

East Coast Swing developed from the wider family of American swing dances and shares important roots with Lindy Hop, which flourished in Harlem during the swing era. Dancers created energetic footwork and playful partner patterns while moving to the jazz and big-band sounds of the 1930s and 1940s.

The history behind this dance helps explain its lively personality. The Library of Congress documents Frankie Manning’s role in Lindy Hop at Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom and his influence on swing dancing. That tradition of improvisation, musical response, and social connection continues to inspire dancers today.

As East Coast Swing evolved, dancers worked with single, double, and triple rhythms. Those variations gave the style flexibility across different tempos and helped create the relaxed bounce and rhythmic energy associated with social swing dancing.
