Holiday Showcase and Ugly Sweater Contest
December 24, 2016
We had a great turnout for the first annual Holiday Showcase and Ugly Sweater Contest. It was our biggest group class in the new location, and everyone had a great time learning the steps to the Jitterbug. We are so glad we chose the same catering company that we used for our Spring Showcase, Porcini Catering, owned by Fred Astaire Red Bank students (and soon to be newlyweds!) Chris Atamian and Alex Mahon. A BIG thank you to Align Amar Yoga for allowing us to use their space for the party.
We had 19 student showcases and we are thrilled to see the level of student dancing progressing higher and higher with each passing month. We started the showcase with all of our Social Foundation students demonstrating a Rumba, and we are all so proud of them for getting out there, many for the first time! We are excited to see your continued progress and can’t wait to see what strides you’ll have made at our Spring Showcase.
We were happy to debut our new children’s program taught by former Broadway performer Pam Rogers. The kids did a great job and we hope the program will continue to grow next year.
Other showcases featured students performing social dance patterns and new choreographed competition routines. A few students dazzled us with routines they have been working on for nearly a year. Everyone looked great in their performance attire, and several showcase performers strutted stunning new custom ballroom gowns made by Kotze.
The Ugly Sweater Contest had some serious competitors, but Mona was by-far the clear winner with some handmade touches, including tinsel and ornaments. She won first prize, which included free dance lessons, some goodies from Fred Astaire, and our first annual Ugly Sweater Contest trophy. Honorable mention went to Karen, with her awesome puff ball sweater. It’s too bad the staff wasn’t eligible for the contest, because Shante came decked out in ornaments, bells and tinsel!
We had a fantastic professional show. Our newest instructor, Vivienne, and Red Bank veteran Joe performed together and showed us how an authentic Bachata is done. Andre and Erin dusted off their shoes and performed a high energy Jive routine, and a festive Foxtrot to the holiday classic White Christmas. We would like to thank Fred Astaire Morristown for letting Natalie Honkonen attend, and thank you to Natalie and Joe for performing their Shaky Mambo and their fun Selfie Chacha routine.
We would like to thank each and every one of you for your patronage in 2016. You helped make Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Red Bank what it is today! We are excited to see you at the New Jersey Team Match on January 14 and at the Valentine’s Spotlight in February.
From all of us at Fred Astaire Red Bank, have a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful 2017! Cheers!
