National Ballroom Dance Week: Dancing and Improving Memory

National Ballroom Dance Week is nearing its end, but that does not mean we’re done talking about all the benefits that come with learning how to ballroom dance.

Would you like to improve your memory? Learning to dance can do that.

Any type of exercise can increase the part of the brain that declines with age – the hippocampus. This area plays a key role in memory and learning. Studies have found that dancing offers something that other methods of exercise cannot. Dancers are challenged week after week. They are learning new moves and techniques, changing postures and frame depending on the dance, and recalling patterns with and without prompting. The variability of each lesson keeps dancers in a constant learning process.
