Tango, Waltz, and Bolero: Do I Have to Choose?

As a ballroom instructor, I frequently get asked, “What is your favorite dance?” And there is never an easy answer because it changes as I learn new figures and new techniques. So I posed this question to the students at Fred Astaire Dance Studio South Metro. Some of them were able to narrow it down to one, but others weren’t. Like Mary.

Here is Mary’s response:

Favorite dances? Tango, Waltz, and Bolero. Why: Good question. Mostly, because I’m a romantic at heart.

Tango because of the crispness of the movements that I hope to perfect with continued practice. The music of Tango is also a big part of why I like this dance. It is a clear statement with definitions.

Waltz for the exact opposite of Tango. It’s gliding sensation as you dance around the floor, which always makes me think of dance movie scenes! The music is subtler, and that makes staying in/on time more of a challenge for me.

Bolero… ah the lovely Bolero. The first dance I was actually able to shut my mind off completely and just enjoy. I like it for the fire it can bring while still remaining smooth.
