What is the hardest part about learning to ballroom dance?

What is the hardest part about ballroom dance?

For me? It was walking through the door for that first lesson.

I had danced before – taken lessons for jazz and tap, competed with my high school’s dance team, dabbled in swing and salsa – but I had never taken a lesson in ballroom dance. A friend knew I was interested in learning ballroom; my obsession with So You Think You Can Dance didn’t help. So he talked me into taking a lesson.

At first, I was excited. I pictured myself dancing like Jenna Johnson or Witney Carson (both SYTYCD alums that went on to be pros on Dancing with the Stars). But then I got nervous. Who was I kidding? I was going to make a fool of myself. I almost canceled my lesson.

But I didn’t.

And I had a blast!

I laughed, was introduced to a bunch of different dances, and got out of my head, away from all those thoughts telling me I looked ridiculous and that I couldn’t do this. Because I could do this! And so can anyone who walks through our doors.
