What Is the Country Western Two-Step?
Country Western dancing is an American blend of European dance styles, with African American influence, and a uniquely “cowboy” flair. It’s thought that the wide-stance steps and heel-toe turns of this dance genre are the result of dancing while wearing spurs!
Unlike other country western dances such as line dances and square dances that are done as a group, the Country Western Two-Step is a partner dance, danced in 4/4 or “common” time. The firm beat of country music makes this a great introduction to dancing, as you’ll quickly get used to counting the beat. In this dance style, partners dance hand-to-hand, rather than holding each other close. This stance may be the result of dance partners trying to protect themselves from dusty cowboy clothing!
There are different variations of the dance and different names, but what is universally agreed is that the Country Western Two-Step is the perfect dance style for anyone who appreciates country music. The steps are easy to learn and it’s a versatile dance that you can bust out at the next country music concert, social dance party, or evening with friends at the bar.
