What Is the West Coast Swing?

The West Coast Swing evolved from the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug in the 1930s and 40s, with a few modifications that made the dance style perfect for Hollywood’s film industry: partners dancing the West Coast Swing stay in a relatively small area, or a “slot.” Because of the limited movement across the floor, it’s believed that Hollywood film directors preferred this dance for the movies as it was easier to film!

West Coast Swing incorporates aspects of many swing dance styles including the Lindy, Shag, Whip, and Push.

The West Coast Swing became popular across the United States due to its versatility. It can be easily adapted to a variety of popular musical styles, from Rock n Roll to Country, classic Swing music, Disco, Rock, and Soul. Dance partners keep a relaxed stance throughout the movements and the slower tempo allows for improvisation. While our instructors will help you learn proper technique, this dance style has plenty of room for personalization and expressing your creativity!

The West Coast Swing is a great dance to learn if you already enjoy social dancing, want to master some basics before trying out swing dancing events, or are simply looking for a fun way to be active and meet new people.
