What Is the Cha Cha?
Cha Cha has its roots in Cuba where it originated in the early 1950’s, evolving out of cha-cha-cha music, the Cuban Triple Mambo and the Rumba. The dance even takes inspiration from the popular Lindy that was sweeping across the U.S. at the time. Cha Cha quickly spread from Cuba to North America where it grew in popularity and became a unique dance style in its own right, distinct from the Mambo and Rumba. It became a staple of nightclub dance floors and has remained popular at social dance nights, weddings and ballroom competitions to this day!
The Cha Cha features three quick steps followed by two slower steps, with steps timed to the beat of the music. Dancers add flair to the dance with exaggerated hip movements.
