What Is the Argentine Tango?
This world-renowned dance style and musical genre has its roots in (you guessed it!) Argentina, taking shape in the suburbs of Buenos Aires in the 19th century. While the precise origins of the dance are not known, it is thought that the Tango was shaped by African and Argentine dance and musical traditions, merging African dance rhythms with Argentine milonga music. The dance began to spread across Argentina and neighboring countries, quickly becoming a dance hall staple despite its risqué reputation. In the 1900s, wealthy young Argentines introduced the Tango to Parisian society and by at least 1913 the dance was all the craze in Paris, London, and New York – becoming a defining feature of Argentine identity abroad.
Unlike the intricate, dramatic choreography of the Tango, Argentine Tango is a highly improvised dance based on a simple walking pattern. Beginners may learn the dance by first mastering the salida – an 8-count sequence that includes a back step, side step, and cross. Once you have these steps to fall back on, you can begin to improvise and make the dance your own.
