What Is the East Coast Swing?

A dance known for its upbeat energy, playfulness, and adaptability, East Coast Swing evolved from the Lindy Hop in the 1940s with roots in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood. There, the music of Chic Webb, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman influenced the new dance style and contributed to the steps and creative styling that remain popular to this day.

Like the Lindy’s slight shuffling movement, East Coast Swing started with a single rhythm. As the single rhythm progressed, it evolved into both the double and triple time Lindy. For modern dancers, all three rhythms form the foundation for Swing dancing.

East Coast Swing swept across dance floors following World War II, becoming an American classic and adapting to evolving musical taste. While it never disappeared from dance floors, East Coast Swing was revived in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, inspiring a new generation of Swing enthusiasts. Today, Swing dancing socials might feature big band music, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, and contemporary classics as dancers continue to add their own unique personality and flair.
