Our city has a vibrant Salsa dance scene with plenty of opportunities to practice your moves at social dance parties around town. These energetic gatherings aren’t just about mastering intricate footwork (though they can help with that), they’re also a chance to be part of a welcoming community, meet new people, and enjoy an active, social hobby with a rich history.
If you’re new to this dance style it can feel intimidating to jump straight into the social dance scene – but even a handful of lessons can help you to feel more confident on the dance floor. Classes can help you to master the basics – meaning you’ll have more fun getting lost in the music the next time you’re out on the town dancing, rather than silently counting your steps. Plus, once you get started with classes you’ll be introduced to a variety of different dance styles, will meet new people with shared interests, and might discover an unexpected passion for ballroom dance!
Want to check out our studio and meet our awesome instructors before signing up for your first class? Stop by our Boise dance studio during Downtown Boise’s First Thursdays! We host a free open house with dance demos, a newcomer group class and social dancing. You can have a look around our inviting studio space, ask questions from our staff, and chat with other new students. Check our Studio Calendar for the next First Thursday Free Open House.

What Is Salsa Dancing?
The vibrant dance form of Salsa originated in the Caribbean where it evolved from a fusion of different dance styles, including Cuban Son, cha-cha, mambo, and other Afro-Caribbean and Latin American dances. When you’re salsa dancing, you’re not just moving your body — you’re immersing yourself in a rich and vibrant cultural tradition that has made its way across the globe to our Salsa lessons in Boise.
Salsa is continuously evolving, and new modern dance styles are associated and named according to the geographical areas where they developed. Some of the most popular Salsa styles are Cuban, Columbian, Los Angeles, New York (or Eddie Torres Style), Puerto Rican, and Rueda.
Cuban Salsa
Also known as “casino,” this style is one of the most popular Salsa styles and is often the one beginners learn first. The name comes from “casino deportivos” – the Cuban dance halls where this style originated in the 1950s. Cuban Salsa is danced in a circular motion, with dance partners rotating around each other using intricate arm wraps.
Colombian Salsa
This style can be recognized by its fast and intricate footwork. Like Cuban Salsa, dancers move in a circular pattern but the Colombian style incorporates more movement in the hips and legs, like kicks and extra steps, while the upper body is held mostly rigid.
LA Style Salsa
This style was developed in the 1990s with an emphasis on theatrics, flair, dips and stunts appropriate for its flashy Hollywood setting. Rather than circling around each other, dancers move along an imaginary line or “slot.” This style features a cross-body lead during which dance partners exchange places.
New York Salsa
This style also features a linear structure and cross-body lead. Unlike the flashy LA style, New York Salsa has a smoother and more laid back visual style. In this dance style, partners sometimes break apart and dance solo before returning to their partner.
Puerto Rican Salsa
This Salsa style features both linear and rotational dance movements and intricate footwork. Like the New York style, Puerto Rican Salsa features dance movements called “shines” where partners break away to show off their moves solo before returning to the other dancer. When it comes to timing, this style is more flexible than some as it can be danced on the “One” or the “Two” beat.
Rueda de Casino (Rueda) Salsa
This style originated from the Cuban or Casino style. The name comes from the Spanish word for “wheel” and references the circular movement of the dancers, who come together with other couples to form a large circle and dance in unison, executing the turn patterns called out by a leader. In this sense, the dance is similar to square dancing.
