What Is Tango Dancing?
Originating in the 19th century in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo, Uraguay, the Tango has its roots in the Milonga, a Spanish folk dance, and likely also carries Moorish and Arabic influences. The dance became known as “Tango” in Argentina in the early 20th century but was known by a variety of names across Latin America, where it was widely popular. The Tango hit American dance floors between 1910 and 1914, captivating dancers and onlookers with its sophisticated motions. As one of the most highly stylized ballroom dances, the Tango achieves a level of drama through the dancers’ close stance and poised pauses.
Today, the Tango has many subtypes and its global popularity endures. The dance is a highly popular staple in the world of ballroom dance competitions and can be found at social dance events across the globe, from the iconic milongas (dance halls) of Buenos Aires to the Quais de la Seine in Paris and even downtown Boise! The Tango’s vibrant movements, passionate music and room for improvisation have resulted in a distinctive, captivating dance style that can quickly become a favorite hobby!
