What Is the Waltz?

Waltz is a classic partner dance in 3/4 time, counted 1-2-3. It is known for smooth, flowing movement, a gentle rise and fall, good posture, and a steady connection between partners. Most students begin with the box step, then add turns, travel around the floor, and musicality as the basics settle in.

Put simply, Waltz teaches you how to move with another person so it feels calm, graceful, and connected, even if you have never danced before.

Yes. Waltz is one of the friendliest first dances because the 1-2-3 count is easy to hear and the box step is simple to learn. Your instructor adds rise and fall, turns, and travel only when you feel ready. Many people with no dance background feel steady on the floor after a few lessons.

No. You can start Waltz on your own or with someone. If you come solo, your instructor dances with you during the lesson, so you always have a partner to practice with. If you have a spouse, fiancé, or friend who wants to learn, you are welcome to come together.

Yes, and many do. Waltz gives couples a shared goal and a relaxed way to spend time together, whether for date nights, anniversaries, family celebrations, or a wedding. Your instructor works with both of you at the same pace, so each partner feels comfortable and sees progress together.

It can be. A slow Waltz has a romantic, classic feel that suits many first-dance songs, and its steady rhythm is forgiving for couples who are new to dancing. Waltz lessons give you the timing and frame to feel confident. For full choreography and planning, visit our Wedding Dance or First Dance pages.

They are related but different. Waltz is slower, which leaves room to learn rise and fall, shaping, and the core patterns. Viennese Waltz is much faster and rotates continuously around the floor. Most students start with Waltz, then try Viennese Waltz once their timing and frame feel natural.

Ballroom or Smooth Waltz focuses on frame, posture, rise and fall, and polished movement, which suits formal events and technique-minded students. Country Waltz is more relaxed, with longer traveling steps to slow country songs. Both share the same three-count timing, so what you learn in one carries straight into the other.

Yes. Private lessons are a great fit if you want one-on-one attention, want to progress faster, or have a set date like a wedding or event. Your instructor builds a plan around your pace and goals. Many students pair private lessons with group classes to practice what they learn in a social setting.

Group class schedules change over time, so contact the studio for the current options. Group classes are a relaxed way to practice timing and movement, build confidence, and get used to dancing with different partners. Many students take private lessons to learn new material and use group classes to practice it.

It depends on your goals, schedule, and how polished you want your dancing to feel. Many students learn enough timing and simple patterns to enjoy a social dance within a few lessons, then keep building from there. If you are getting ready for a specific event, your instructor can plan backward from your date.

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, similar to what you would wear for a nice casual evening out. Choose shoes that stay on securely and let you turn without sticking to the floor. Leather or suede soles work well. You don’t need dance shoes to begin, and your instructor can suggest options later.
