What Is the Viennese Waltz?

Viennese Waltz is the original ballroom waltz. It uses the same 1-2-3 count as classic Waltz, but the music is much faster and the couple turns almost the whole time as they travel around the floor. That is why every lesson focuses on balance, a steady frame, and clean footwork.

New to dancing? Classic Waltz is the best first step. Its slower tempo teaches the same timing and frame you will use here.

Couples

03

Social dancers

When a fast waltz plays at a wedding or gala, most people sit down. With a few lessons, you can be the couple that gets up.

04

Wedding and first dance students

Few first dances look as romantic as a Viennese Waltz. For full choreography and planning, see our Wedding Dance or First Dance pages.

Adults who want graceful movement

Viennese Waltz sharpens balance and body control. Once the turns click, the feeling of floating around the room is hard to beat.

06

Technique-focused students

Holding a frame at speed, turning without losing balance, and steering on a busy floor make Viennese Waltz one of the most satisfying dances to master.

Viennese Waltz Dance Lessons Alhambra Students Ask About

Common questions about Viennese Waltz dance lessons Alhambra students ask before their first class.

Yes. Fred Astaire Dance Studios, Alhambra teaches Viennese Waltz in private lessons, couples lessons, and group classes. You can come on your own or with a partner. Most students build a base in classic Waltz first, but motivated beginners can start right here in private lessons. An intro lesson is the easiest way to begin.

Speed and rotation. Classic Waltz is slower, with shaped figures and pauses that let you change direction. Viennese Waltz moves at nearly twice the tempo and turns almost nonstop around the floor. Both use the same three-count timing, so what you learn in one carries over, and many students learn classic Waltz first.

No, but it is usually a second dance rather than a first. Most students learn timing, frame, and balance in classic Waltz, then add Viennese rotation once they feel steady. If you want to start here, private lessons let your instructor build the speed slowly. Your intro lesson will show you the right starting point.

No. If you come alone, your instructor is your partner in private lessons, and partners rotate in group classes so everyone dances. Many students learn solo and dance with a spouse or friends later. If you already have a partner, you are welcome to learn together.

Yes. It is one of the most striking first dances there is, with sweeping turns that look beautiful in person and in photos. Lessons build the balance and timing you need, and your instructor sets the speed to your comfort level. For full choreography and planning, see our Wedding Dance and First Dance pages.

It is the first thing most people ask. Lessons add rotation a little at a time and teach you the balance and spotting tricks dancers and skaters use to stay steady. Your body adjusts quickly, and any early dizziness fades as your technique improves. You are never spun faster than you can handle.
