Dance Through the Decades

This month, we’re celebrating dancing through the decades at Fred Astaire Boise! Read the blog for a waltz down memory lane and revisit iconic dance decades.

While people have turned to dance to socialize, find community and express themselves throughout history, some decades stand out for their signature dance styles and vibrant dance culture. This October, Fred Astaire Boise is celebrating dancing through the decades!

Take a waltz down memory lane and revisit some of the most iconic dance eras.

Roaring 20s

From the flashy Charleston to the classic Foxtrot, the 1920s were characterized by energetic dance styles. Think dance parties worthy of “The Great Gatsby.”

During this decade, party goers took their cues from Broadway and dance floors were filled with showy, lively dances. Women began to bob their hair and wear shorter dress styles as a way to express themselves and rebel against the status quo and the flapper still defines the dance culture of the 20s.

Fabulous 50s

Rock’n’Roll, the Jive, the Bunny Hop, the Twist… dancing shaped much of American youth culture in the 50s! With the rise of television, more people had an easy way to see and learn the latest dance moves and dance crazes swept across the country.

An increased interest in Caribbean music during this decade meant that the Mambo, Rumba, Calypso and Cha Cha Cha skyrocketed in popularity and became fixtures in American dance culture.

Swinging 70s

In pop culture, the dances of the 70s defined the decade. Disco music and dancing became a cultural phenomenon with disco balls, glitzy fashion, and the Hustle taking over dance floors. Line dances became ultra popular during the 70s and remain a fixture at wedding receptions to this day.

From Studio 54 to “Saturday Night Fever,” this dance era made an enduring mark on social dancing.
