Feeling Foxy: Boost Your Confidence on the Dance Floor

A group of dancers in casual clothes face their partners as they learn the Foxy at Fred Astaire Boise dance studio.

If you’ve ever left the dance floor during a slow song because you felt awkward shuffling back and forth, the Foxy is for you! The versatile Foxy can help you feel at home on the dance floor and is perfect for weddings, parties and social dancing nights.

A hybrid of the smooth, elegant waltz and the energetic foxtrot, the Foxy emerged in the early 20th century. When other common dance styles don’t fit the rhythm of modern, slow songs, the Foxy can get you out on the dance floor — in fact it’s a popular choice for wedding dances for this reason! As a bonus, the Foxy is simple to learn, making it a great introduction to partner dancing for beginners.

Mastering The Basics

The Foxy uses a basic ballroom hold and side-touch movements. There are two main variations to the dance style, 4-count or 6-count. Couples might choose to dance the 4-count basic for slower songs and the 6-count for songs that are more upbeat or rhythmic. The Foxy is an elegant, simple dance whether you’re using smaller steps on a crowded dance floor or taking bigger steps to travel across the ballroom.

Whether you want to elevate your kitchen dance sessions with your partner or feel more confident the next time a slow song comes on at a wedding, the Foxy is a dance you’ll want to have in your back pocket.
