Fred Astaire Dance Studio Offers Lessons to Women Battling Breast Cancer

Most of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer in one way or another. At Fred Astaire Dance Studio Brandon, we have three brave warriors who have journeyed this path.

Ashley Paul with Tampa’s Bay News 9 paid a visit to the Brandon studio on Tuesday, October 15 to speak with one of these brave and inspiring dance students. Joanna Kellogg has taken dance lessons at Fred Astaire Brandon for several years. She spoke with Ashley about the impact dance has had on her wellness journey.

“It’s been a positive influence on my life…my spiritual being, and mental health.” – Joanna

Each October, the studio hosts a “Go PINK” dance party where EVERYONE can join in supporting Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. Students come to practice their dancing while wearing PINK, and are encouraged to bring a friend along. One of our survivors chooses a Breast Cancer charity, and Fred Astaire Brandon donates money for each and every person wearing pink!

This year, Joanna Kellogg chose local charity Lisa’s Pink Petals of Hope, located at 106 W. Robertson Street, Brandon, FL 33511. This wonderful non-profit helps women recover from breast cancer surgery
and treatment with dignity, helping to supply specialized garments, wigs and even financial support to women under financial hardship.

Carol Poole, the owner/organizer and sister of the Lisa in Lisa’s Pink Petals of Hope, keeps the non-profit going in her honor. She says, “One voice is a whisper but many – a roar,” expressing her appreciation. Working with students and their guests, the studio was able to donate around $400 to this amazing cause!

Joanna and her husband Michael danced a beautiful Survivor Spotlight. Take a look at their stunning waltz!
