What to Expect From Your First Lesson

Our Introductory Course and Wedding Consultations are designed to give you a welcoming first experience with partner dancing. During the intro course you will be introduced to three of the main styles we teach: Ballroom, Latin, and Swing. While the Wedding Consultation focuses on your first dance.

This experience is not only an introduction to dancing, but also to Fred Astaire Dance Studios, our teaching method, your instructor, and the activities offered at the studio.

Each private lesson during the Introductory Course is typically divided into two parts. About 20 minutes are spent dancing, where your instructor introduces basic movements and helps you picture how much fun partner dancing can be. The remainder of the lesson your instructor will:

  • Introduce the Fred Astaire teaching system
  • Explain group classes, practice parties, and other studio activities
  • Help you understand how to get the most out of your lessons

 

The Introductory Course is a true trial program with no commitment. During your second visit, we will introduce you to our Beginner Program, where you will start learning the basic steps of the most popular social dances.

During your wedding consultation, you and your instructor will listen to your music, explore dance styles that fit it, and try a few beginner elements so you can see what feels most natural, while also discussing details such as your venue, dance floor size, and the bride’s dress; together you will create a plan and lesson schedule to turn your vision into a confident and beautiful first dance you’ll be proud to relive every time you watch your wedding video. We recommend wearing shoes similar to what you plan to wear at the wedding, and it’s perfectly fine if you have not yet chosen your song – trying a few dance styles often helps couples decide which music and style they love most.

Whether you have dance experience or are stepping onto the dance floor for the first time, you will receive supportive guidance every step of the way. Most importantly, your first lesson is about having fun, meeting great people, and discovering how enjoyable dancing can be.
