Argentine Tango
Although the exact origins of the dance (and the world) are lost to legend, Tango originated in Argentina in the late 1800s
Bolero
Classic Bolero, introduced in Spain in 1780, is truly the “dance of love”, and is performed to music featuring a constant beat of drums.
Cha Cha
A Cuban dance derived from the Mambo and Rumba; its name comes from the rhythm developed by a syncopation of the fourth beat.
East Coast Swing
East Coast Swing evolved from the Lindy Hop in the 1940s, and is perhaps the most famous American folk dance.
Foxtrot
In 1912, Vaudeville dancer Harry Fox was the first to use the “slow step”, danced to an exhilarating new style of music – ragtime.
Hustle
A more modern entry, this disco style was most popular in the nightclub scene from the late 1960s through the 1970s.
Jive
This style evolved from popular American dances of the 1930s such as Jitterbug, Boogie-Woogie, Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, etc.
Mambo
First introduced in Latin America in the 1930s, Mambo attained instantaneous popularity in American film and pop culture.
Merengue
Lore has this dance originating at a royal fiesta honoring a returning war hero, in either Haiti or the Dominican Republic.
Paso Doble
This dance dates back many centuries, and was originally intended for use at bullfights when the matador was victorious in the arena.
Quickstep
The Quickstep has its roots in 1920s New York City Ragtime, and only later became a partner dance.
Rumba
Characterized by a smooth, subtle hip motion and a heavy walking step, Rumba first invaded the U.S. in the early 1930s.
Salsa
Salsa combines passion, energy, sensuous style and joy, and has its origins in the Afro-Cuban dance, Rumba.
Samba
Of Brazilian origin, this festive serenade features a repetitive melody, continually interrupted by the strumming of a guitar.
Tango
The romantic Tango descended from an early Spanish folk dance, and features intriguing asymmetrical and sophisticated dance patterns.
Viennese Waltz
The Viennese Waltz was first danced by European royalty in the 1800s, and was deemed startling due to the close proximity of the dancers.
Waltz
The Waltz dates back to Bavaria 400 years ago, but it was not introduced into “society” until 1812, when it first appeared in English ballrooms.
West Coast Swing
With its sophisticated style and easy adaptation to contemporary rock music, this 1950s style quickly gained popularity in the U.S.

We highly recommend that you schedule your Lessons close together, especially in the beginning. The less time between Lessons means the less you will forget, the less you will need to review, and the more quickly you will reach a confident level in your dancing. We also recommend private Lessons in conjunction with group classes and practice sessions, as it’s the most effective and efficient way for you to learn and stay motivated.
No, it’s not! Our Dance Instructors are all highly-qualified and welcoming professionals, who participate in ongoing dance training throughout their careers. In addition, our progressive system of instruction and unique trophy system make it easy for you to learn. It will take a bit of time to master the various dances and a repertoire of steps, but a steady approach with periodic practice will produce visible results in less time than you’d think. We highly encourage you to keep your Lessons scheduled close together. You will progress more quickly, and it will make your experience more valuable to you. We promise: the learning is fun – and you will be on your way to confident social dancing after your very first dance Lesson!

My wife and I got a gift certificate for a single lesson. We had a wonderful time. We were welcomed in with warmth and enthusiasm and introduced to our instructor, Rya. Rya was great. He was very patient with us, explained everything in detail, and used several techniques to keep us relaxed so we could focus on learning. He exposed us to several basic dances during the 30 minute lesson. Well done!

My wife and I wanted to learn something new and dance lessons had been on our list for a while. This led us to this studio. We had one lesson and then the next thing we knew we were doing private lessons a few times a week.
We did this about a year and learned so much in a relatively short amount of time. I feel like we could dance at any wedding or whatever occasion and put together a dance. We felt more well-round and a sense of accomplishment at our new skills.
I wish I could say the dancing, dance parties and outings were the best thing about this studio. The dancing was great but the people who run this place are amazing. The instructors are what made this experience so much more. All of them are so much fun and always your biggest fan. We loved all of them and way they created a “dance family” environment.
Our main instructor, Hannah was so much fun and was always pushing us to explore and excel. We love Hannah as a dance instructor and as a person.
Do yourself a favor and just go for one lesson and see what it’s all about. I promise you will not be disappointed.

My wide Paige and I are having a blast. Ive always wanted to take dance classes and with Fred Astaire Dance Studio being up in Briarcliff, it was the perfect storm. Our instructor Hannah has been wonderful to work with as well as owners Tavier and Amy. Cant say enough good things about our journey. We have been taking lessons for 6 months and loving the fact that we can adjust and adapt to dance at all kinda of functions.
Fred Astaire will forever be my home away from home! The instructors are knowledgeable and professional! They are the welcome mat at your front door and the last thing you see before you leave for the night! The atmosphere is warm and inviting and makes any beginner feel comfortable! The owners, Amy and Tavier, have truly brought dance back to Kansas City! I’ll be forever grateful for how dance has changed me! Studio was beautiful, spacious and a really fun yet intentional vibe. Michele was simply an amazing teacher. Her positive attitude and fun spirit allowed us to quickly learn which was critical given our limited time being fro out of town. She is a special talent. Finishing our last lesson with Hanna was a nice blend as she focus on style to go with our footwork. They complimented each other very well. I felt like all the teachers were very professional. Hannah was very patient with us newbies. The in-person private lessons made all the difference. Going in to our wedding feeling confident and excited. We truly appreciate all Hannah did for us. Would definitely recommend classes or private lessons!!!

Signed up for wedding dance lessons with my partner. The teachers and staff are amazing, I was quickly able to build up my skill and dance confidence from basically nothing. Having successfully impressed at the wedding with our dance (choreographed by Hannah!), the best part was certainly the time spent learning and practicing in the dance studio! Cannot say enough about all the people you will meet at Fred Astaire, will certainly find myself back for some Friday dance parties!

I had never had any formal dance lessons and now I feel like I could be confident on any dance floor. This review could be several pages long but I keep it simple, short and sweet. It's SUCH a wonderful experience! I highly recommend. You don't need a partner- that's what the instructors are for 🙂 that's what held me back from trying it out for so long. AND they have group classes that are included which is great for the social aspects of life! All of the instructors are super knowledgeable and have different styles of teaching which helps all around. There's even a group chat if you're into that kind of thing 😉
