Our Introductory Special is a great way to take the first step into the wonderful world of dancing. Fred Astaire Dance Studio provides New Yorkers demand for excellence. Fred Astaire Dance Studio tailors your dance program, whether to prepare for an event, to master a powerful social skill or to become a competitive-level dancer. An overall knowledge of several dances is generally most beneficial, as it makes an individual more versatile and provides him or her with a greater vocabulary in any dance.
However, if you’re primarily interested in a particular dance, a program focusing on that interest can be tailored as well. Dancing gives you confidence in your own physical presence few other activities can provide. It extends beyond the dance floor. It will serve you forever in all other types of social and professional endeavors.
Dancing isn’t just about the steps and music; it’s a perfect combination of physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation.
Want to meet new people – Dance!
Dancing is a great way to add excitement to your life. Although learning to dance takes some concentration and even dedication, you will be constantly surrounded by artistic, cheerful people who make it a fun and rewarding experience.
Gain some confidence – Dance!
A wise man once said that the appearance of confidence is confidence. And that’s the one thing all good dancers have in common — confidence. Dancing will give you confidence in your physical presence few other activities can provide. It will serve you forever in all other types of social and even professional endeavors.
Relieve some of the stress in your life – Dance!
In today’s fast-paced world, we sometimes forget to take a moment for ourselves. Dancing provides a temporary escape from your normal daily activities, a chance to relax, relieve stress, and concentrate on yourself.
Bored or intimidated by the gym – Dance!
It’s great cardio-vascular and the national osteoporosis foundation has done studies indicating that ballroom dancing is not only a osteoporosis preventative exercise, but it can be a curative one as well. Dancing offers a combination of athletics and arts in a unique package. It is even an event under consideration by the Olympics, where it is called DanceSport. The pinnacle of exercise and athletics, such endorsement proves its exercise potential and one that can be practiced regardless of age.
Competition can be an important part of the ballroom dance experience. It provides a wonderful tool through which every student can challenge themselves regardless of their level of dancing.
Pro-Am Competition consists of a professional instructor dancing with an amateur student. This is a great opportunity for the student to experience the thrill of competitive dancing with the safety net of a professional’s experience to guide them.
Competitive categories are broken down into age categories, levels of proficiency, and hours of instruction taken. New students may compete after only 25 lessons in the Novice division!
Some people compete for fun and others for the challenge. In the end, the result is the same — their dancing improves.
Competitions also offer a wide array of social settings from casual breakfasts through formal banquets. Best of all they encourage camaraderie between individuals with a common interest. Each competition is a new learning experience and a fascinating opportunity to expose oneself to great dancing.
Should you be more seriously interested in competition, we also offer coachings, seminars and workshops with the best coaches and choreographers in the United States and Europe. These individuals also work with the best competitive professionals in our studio while they are here as well as other professionals from the metropolitan area who avail themselves of these coaches’ “limited engagement” presence at our Fred Astaire West Side.

As this is the first dance for the rest of your life together, we put a great deal of attention and detail into helping you select music and choreography to make the moment truly magical. We can instruct you in a number of social dances as well to ensure that you will always feel comfortable dancing the night away. Every effort is made to ease the couple’s anxiety and enhance one of the most special days of their life. Don’t procrastinate — call us today in order to give yourself time to feel confident about your dancing before the big day.
How To Get Started
You can get started by:
- Using our Introductory Special Program – If you are interested in exploring 2-3 dances that are popular at weddings, take advantage of our Introductory Special (two 25 minute private lessons and one practice session for only $75.00 per couple.) You will be introduced to the basics of two slow dances (usually popular as a “first” dance), and one faster party dance (to be used during the rest of your celebration). Your teacher will get a chance to understand your needs, goals and current dance skills better prior to starting a First Dance choreography for you. He/She will then be able to recommend a dance lesson package suitable for you.
- Using a Wedding Dance Consultation Lesson – If you have already selected your wedding dance music and/or are very close to your wedding date and rather concentrate on learning your First Dance only, a full wedding consultation lesson may be a better way for you to get started. It is a fifty minute private lesson at the $130.00 price with one of our wedding dance specialists, designed to introduce you to a few of the basic steps that apply to the rhythm of the selected music. After you complete the consultation lesson your teacher will be able to recommend for you one of our wedding packages and you can credit your lesson towards the package of your choice if you decide to continue dancing with us.
- Wedding Packages: A variety of packages specially designed with wedding plans in mind are available. You and your instructor can develop special choreography using basic steps to make your first dance very special for you both and very impressive to your guests. To help that along, you will get a chance to rehearse your first dance at our regular practice sessions. We’re a friendly and encouraging (and safe) audience!!!
If you do not have a song in mind, our staff has a large selection of possible choices for every taste and style. You could also look at some suggestions at The Knot.com. After your wedding day
We’ve all been at events and noticed that couple who dance together like they’ve done so for all of their lives. Well, we’ll tell you a little secret — they have!!! They’re so at ease in each other’s arms, regardless of the music or the event. We all want to be them. Make dancing a part of your married life just as it’s been a part of your wedding day. It can be a continuing celebration of your lives together. Many couples view the dance lessons after the wedding as their on-going “date night”. With busy professional lives, it’s sometimes difficult to find time to focus on each other, to hold each other in their arms. And building on what you’ve accomplished with your wedding dance you have the tools you need to become that couple everyone looks at, admires and, yes, envies.
Our unique teaching system includes a Three Tiered Method of regularly scheduled private instruction as well as group lessons and practice lessons:
Private instruction, with one or more key teachers, gives you the specialized and personalized attention necessary to look and feel great on the dance floor, while developing the ability to lead or follow any partner. This is where we perfect and polish your dancing while moving at your own pace.
Group lessons are also a necessary part of instruction because this is where patterns, technique, and style are learned. Equally important, group lessons provide you with the opportunity to meet other students with similar dancing goals, develop balance, and learn the mechanics of dancing.
Practice lessons are a great practical application of what you are learning in your program because they complete the lesson information taught in our private and group lessons. Learning is one thing, but making the material work in a live setting while dancing with different people is quite another. The practice lesson will put everything together as well as aid in music identification and help you to learn not to run into other people on the dance floor. You can meet other students and practice your leading and following skills in a fun, relaxed environment! Teachers can tailor their private lessons based on how they see their students progressing.
Our dance instructors are highly skilled and trained to help you learn using the unique Fred Astaire Method. Hailing from around the world, our teachers are actively competing, award-winning professionals and gifted educators. Many of our teachers have degrees in the fine arts and all have passed rigorous exams given by the Imperial Society of the Teachers of Dance and/or the Fred Astaire Curriculum certification.
Our Trophy System
We offer the Fred Astaire Trophy System as an easy way for you to track your progress while you enjoy dancing! Our Beginner and Social Foundation Programs teach newer students the step patterns and techniques to move around the dance floor. From there, a student can progress to either Social Bronze or Advanced Bronze. The main goal of either Bronze level is to get our students to the point where they can dance on any size dance floor, to any music, with any partner and feel comfortable and confident. The Social Bronze focuses more on social dancing and the Advanced Bronze is for students looking to progress beyond “just getting by”. From there, our students can move onto the Silver level and then all the way to the Gold!
Our dance curriculum covers the full range of American, Latin-American, International Style, and Exhibition/Theatre Arts dances. World famous dance champions and registered judges on the Fred Astaire National Dance Board constantly study and review our curriculum to make sure that only the finest, up-to-date programs are being offered to our students.
