Dancing with Our Heroes Gala – Meet Ridgefield’s Hero

DWOH Gala

Join us for a wonderful evening Saturday March 10th for Dancing with Our Heroes Gala and Competition. Fred Astaire Franchised Dance Studios of New England and the Friends of the Fisher House CT have combined efforts for the 3rd Gala to take place at the Mystic Marriott. These joined forces have raised over $260,000 in the past to help the Fisher House in CT break ground and open its’ doors and now we plan to help continue to support the operation.

The Fred Astaire Dance Studios all over New England have paired a Hero with a professional dance instructor to prepare for a competition that is taking place as part of the Gala. As defined for this event, a Hero is any member (active or retired) of the US Armed Services, or the spouse of a currently deployed member. Each dance studio is providing free lessons to help each Hero prepare for this Ballroom & Latin Dance competition.

The Gala will include general dancing, a silent auction, sit down dinner, professional shows, and of course, the “Dancing with Our Heroes” competition. The proceeds of the event will be donated to The Friends of Fisher House Connecticut to help support the Fisher House of the West Haven VA. Our goal this year is to raise $100,000.

Wondering how you can help? There are many ways to be involved! You can, of course, join us for this wonderful evening to see the competition and everything taking place first hand! If you cannot make it, you can go to www.dancingwithourheroes.com and donate by voting for your favorite hero, it’s only $1 per vote.

Ridgefield’s local Hero is George Schuster dancing with Elyse and the team would love all the support and well wishes possible!

George is a native of Ridgefield and was drafted in 1965 into the US Military. He was admitted into the United States Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island where he was commissioned as an Ensign. His first ship was the USS Kankakee which refueled aircraft carriers and destroyers underway first in the Caribbean and then in the North Sea. His second ship was the USS Indra which served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 and received a US Navy Unit Commendation for its service. To this day George is still actively involved in the American Legion Post 78 as Adjutant and is a member of the Post Ceremonial Honor Guard Program. He is thrilled to be taking part in this event and support such a wonderful cause.
