Ballroom dancing for kids: what will it teach them?

Have you ever heard someone say “I’m so glad I waited until I was older to start taking dance lessons?” Of course not! Everyone always says they wish they started taking dance lessons when they were younger. So should you enroll your child in some ballroom dance lessons? Yes! And here are just a few reasons why.

Let’s start with the obvious dance skills, but unlike ballet, tap, jazz, etc, a person can take ballroom dancing with them for the rest of their life. Not to say that ballet, tap, jazz, etc aren’t great skills to learn, but they don’t translate very well into a non-recital environment. Ballroom dancing can be used on any given evening for the rest of one’s life.

Ballroom dancing doesn’t just build coordination, grace, poise, posture, and flexibility, but it also builds core strength and provides a great cardio workout. Does your child spend too much time sitting on the couch with their phone or tablet? This is a perfect way to disguise a workout in a really fun activity!

Besides all the physical skills, ballroom dancing also provides great social skills, especially in this day and age where everyone communicates so much through technology. This teaches someone of any age, to actually ask someone to dance, out loud and not through a text message. Just that alone can build confidence and self-esteem. When anyone, especially kids, struggles with interacting with other people, they tend to shy away from social situations that could potentially improve their social skills. With just a few dance lessons and one invitation to dance, your child’s social skills could start improving incredibly.
