Social Dance Party: The Fear to Dance with Someone Else

Social Dance Parties

It’s been a few weeks since you started dance lessons and you’re getting ready for your first social event. The only reason you’re doing this is because your instructor has been nagging you non stop since you first signed up for dance lessons about the “importance” of social dance parties and how “beneficial” it will be for your dancing. You’ve been able to delay coming for this long because you feel nervous, you don’t like the idea of dancing with lots of people around and you certainly don’t like the idea of dancing with other people.

Is it scary that first social dance party? Yes, it can be a little intimidating, but it truly does make you a better dancer. Whether you’ve been coming in with your partner, or your instructor has been your partner, you’re very much used to dancing with only one person and would like to keep it that way. Dancing with different partners throughout the evening WILL improve your dancing though!

Why you may ask? The reason being that sometimes we get a little bit too used to how that one person leads/follows, or complacent as some may say. Dancing with someone new helps you to become a better leader/follower because you really have to pay attention and focus. If you’re a leader, you have to make sure that you really know how to lead the steps your dancing. If you’re a follower, you have to really pay attention to what the leader is leading you in and you shouldn’t try to back-lead or anticipate the next step.

The great thing about coming to any of the studio’s social parties that we host, is that at one point in time, everyone in attendance was in your exact same shoes. Every single person was a beginner and knows exactly how it feels that first party. Luckily, this means that everyone who you will encounter or dance with knows exactly how you are feeling and is very understanding AND friendly!

So check our monthly calendar and give us a call at Ridgefield Fred Astaire Dance Studio and we can help you make that first experience at a party as comfortable and fun as possible!
