What to expect on your first lesson

From the moment you walk in, your first ballroom dance lesson is designed to feel welcoming, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable. Your instructor will introduce you to several different dance styles — from the elegance of Waltz to the energy of Swing to the romance of Rumba — so you can get a feel for what excites you and start discovering your favorite. There’s no rushing, no pressure, and absolutely no expectation that you’ll have it all figured out by the end. The focus is entirely on the basics — simple steps, natural movement, and building your confidence on the floor. Think of it less like a class and more like an experience built just for you. Your instructor will keep things light, positive, and encouraging every step of the way, because the goal of your first lesson isn’t perfection — it’s progress. You’ll leave with a smile on your face, a few new moves under your belt, and very likely, a whole lot of excitement about coming back for more.

Dance Lessons FAQ

Here’s answers to some common questions about starting dance lessons – including how to get started, what to expect, what to wear, and more. Contact your local Fred Astaire Dance Studio!

Absolutely not! This is one of the biggest misconceptions about ballroom dancing, and we’re happy to clear it up. Many of our most passionate and accomplished students take lessons completely on their own. Your professional instructor serves as your partner during every lesson, so you get the full dance experience without needing to bring anyone with you. Whether you’re single, your partner isn’t interested, or you simply prefer to learn at your own pace — you are 100% welcome here just as you are!

No special outfit required! Just come in something comfortable that allows you to move freely — casual clothing like slacks, leggings, or dress pants work great. For shoes, avoid flip flops, heavy boots, or very thick-soled sneakers. A low-heeled shoe or a smooth-soled dress shoe works best on the dance floor.  If you eventually want to invest in a pair of dance shoes, we can guide you on what to look for — but for your first lesson, just wear what you have!

We teach a wide variety of ballroom, Latin and social dance styles to suit every taste and goal, including:

Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz

Rumba, Cha Cha, East Coast Swing, Bolero, Mambo, Samba, Paso Doble, Jive

Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango, Country Western, and more!

Perfect — that’s exactly who we love working with! There is absolutely no experience required to get started. In fact, many of our best students came to us having never taken a single dance lesson in their life. Starting from scratch means you have no bad habits to unlearn, and our instructors can build your technique the right way from day one. We break everything down into simple, easy-to-follow steps so you always feel comfortable and confident no matter where you’re starting from.

Faster than you think! Most students are genuinely surprised by how much they learn in just their first two lessons. Within a few weeks of consistent lessons, you’ll have a solid foundation in your chosen dance style, a growing sense of rhythm and timing, and — most importantly — real confidence on the dance floor. Of course, everyone progresses at their own pace, and that’s completely okay. Our instructors are skilled at adapting to your learning style so you always feel challenged but never overwhelmed.
