Celebrating Strength, Grace, and Community: 2026 International Women’s Day at Fred Astaire – Wellington

Every year on March 8, people around the world celebrate International Women’s Day — a day dedicated to honoring the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women across every field of life.

At Fred Astaire – Wellington, we see those qualities every single day.

This year, we are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day with a special Dance Social — and we invite you to join us in honoring the strength, grace, and confidence that women bring to the dance floor and beyond!

A Brief History of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day began in the early 1900s during a time of significant social and political change. In 1908, thousands of women marched in New York City advocating for better working conditions, voting rights, and equal opportunities. The movement gained momentum internationally, and by 1911, the first official International Women’s Day events were held across Europe.

In 1977, the United Nations officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day, solidifying it as a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call for continued progress.

Today, International Women’s Day is not only about history. It is about recognizing the courage of women past and present, celebrating growth and contributions, and empowering future generations.

What International Women’s Day Has to Do with Ballroom Dance

Ballroom dance is a beautiful reflection of partnership, confidence, and expression — qualities that align perfectly with the spirit of International Women’s Day.

Historically, ballroom dance has evolved alongside cultural shifts. Women in dance have moved from strictly defined roles to becoming competitors, studio owners, coaches, choreographers, and leaders in the industry. The dance floor has become a place where women express strength and artistry in equal measure.

But beyond the history and abstract, we see something even more powerful in our studio every day:

We see women who:

  • Walk in feeling unsure and leave standing taller

  • Set personal goals and achieve them

  • Support one another with warmth and encouragement

  • Discover confidence they did not know they had

There is something transformative about learning to move with intention. About trusting your body. About taking up space with poise and presence. About learning when to lead, what you can control, and to create change for the partnership by creating change within yourself.

Ballroom dance does not just teach step patterns. It builds confidence, resilience, and self-expression — all things worth celebrating on International Women’s Day.
