The Russian Old New Year is traditionally celebrated on January 13-14, widely a nostalgic family holiday celebrated with large meals, music & celebratory drinking. Prior to switching to the Gregorian calendar circa 1918, the Julian calendar celebrated New Year’s on January 13-14. When the Russian Soviet Republic adopted the Gregorian calendar, Russian Orthodox churches continued to use the Julian calendar, and the New Year became a separate holiday celebrated by both calendars.
