How Dancing Supports Healthy Aging

For adults over 60, the benefits go well beyond keeping busy. Here’s what regular dancing can help with:

  •     Balance and stability. The posture and movement in ballroom dancing can improve balance, especially in older adults. That can help prevent falls.
  •     Memory and focus. Learning new patterns keeps your mind engaged. Harvard Medical School has written about how dancing affects the brain, including memory.
  •     Heart health. Dancing is an aerobic activity, so it can support cardiovascular health.
  •     Friendship. Partner dancing brings like-minded people together, which can help reduce loneliness. Our practice parties make it easy to get to know other students.
  •     Confidence. As your technique improves and you feel more at ease with others, your confidence tends to grow. You may notice it outside the studio, too.
  •     Stress relief. A lesson is a break from your daily routine. It gives you time to relax and focus just on yourself.

We’ve gathered more of this research in our overview of the health benefits of dancing.

Come Solo or Bring a Partner

Many of our dance classes for older adults are designed for people who come on their own. Our instructors pair students up in group classes and swap partners along the way, so everyone gets time to practice. One-on-one, your instructor becomes your partner.

Coming alone to our classes for over-50s has its own upside. You meet new people and build connections within our studio community.

Couples are welcome too. If you’d rather come with your spouse or a friend, you can sign up together.
