How Pro-Am Dance Works

In pro-am dance, your instructor is your partner in lessons and on the competition floor. Together, you build choreography around your level and your goals.

If you’ve watched Dancing with the Stars, you already know the idea. A professional is paired with a newcomer, and they perform as a team.

Pro-am dancing is also a sport, with regular training, set goals and judged events.

Pro-am ballroom dancing covers a wide range of styles. Your instructor can prepare you across American Smooth and Rhythm, the International styles and Night Club dances.

Train With Active Professional Dancers

Your instructor isn’t only a teacher. Our team includes active pro athletes and choreographers who know the competition floor from the inside.

From Beginner to Gold: How You Progress

Fred Astaire Dance Studios uses a trophy system, so you always know where you stand. It starts with the Beginner and Social Foundation programs. These teach the step patterns and techniques you need to move comfortably around the floor.

Next comes Bronze, our most popular level. At Bronze, you can move with confidence on any size floor, to any music, with any partner. From there, you continue to Silver and then Gold.

Pro-am ballroom dancing uses the same levels. At competitions, you’re matched against students at the same stage as you. Read more about our teaching methods and trophy system.

Ballroom Competitions and Showcases

Pro-Am Dance Competitions

Fred Astaire Dance Studios runs its own pro-am dance competitions at regional, inter-regional, national and international levels. At national events, some of the most respected judges in ballroom score every round.

A ballroom dance competition with Fred Astaire Dance Studios is more than a contest. There are Pro Shows, dance camps and dinner galas, too. These events are also where the brand’s National and World Champions are crowned.

National competitions take place at elegant venues in destinations across the country. They’re a chance to travel, meet new friends and progress faster. You can browse
the calendar of Fred Astaire Dance Studios national competitions
for upcoming dates.

Ballroom Dance Showcases

Not every Pro-Am student wants to compete. A ballroom dance showcase or spotlight lets you perform your routine for an audience, without a scoreboard. Mini-matches are another relaxed way to test your progress.

Our instructors are also certified in Showdance, so your routine can be built for the stage.

Ballroom Dance Competitions in Miami

Your first ballroom competition doesn’t have to mean a long trip. The Fred Astaire Dance Studios South Florida region hosts its own events. One of them is the South Florida Holiday Ball, a Miami ballroom dance competition. Past regional events include the City Lights Championships at JW Marriott Miami Turnberry. A local ballroom competition can be a good way to try the experience before you travel.

Is Pro-Am Right for You?

Pro-Am suits dancers who want a goal to work toward. That might be one showcase performance or a place on the podium at a national event.

Our instructors can help you become a confident social dancer, a competitive ballroom dancer or both. The trophy system gives you a clear path from your first lesson to your first event.

If competing isn’t for you, the other programs we run in Miami Beach
cover social dancing, weddings and more.

What Dancers Ask About Pro-Am

Do I Need My Own Partner for Pro-Am Ballroom?

No. In pro-am ballroom, your instructor is your partner, both in lessons and on the floor. That makes the format a good fit if you don’t have a regular partner.

No. Pro-am dance doesn’t have to mean competing. You can perform at a ballroom dance showcase or spotlight event instead. You still get the thrill of dancing for an audience, without scores.

Yes. Our team holds certifications in Rhythm and International Latin. That means you can train for a pro-am Latin dance competition as well as ballroom events. National events even include a Night Club division.

At a ballroom dance competition, you perform alongside students at your level, and judges score each performance. Spectator tickets are available too, so friends and family can come and watch.

Yes. In competitive ballroom, you compete against dancers at your own level, so you don’t need to be advanced. Talk to your instructor about when it makes sense to enter your first event.
