Wedding Wednesday:
Mike & Megan — From College Hallways to the Dance Floor
Some love stories begin with a grand introduction. Mike and Megan’s started with a college housing assignment.
The two met during their freshman year at the University of Rhode Island, where they were assigned rooms on the same floor. What began as college life turned into something much bigger — a relationship that would eventually bring them back to one of the places where it all began.
Back to Newport
When it came time to propose, Mike chose a place filled with meaning.
He proposed to Megan on the Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island — the same place where they had started dating. It was a return to the beginning of their story, but this time with a very different question.
From there came wedding planning, and eventually, the decision to take dance lessons.
Mike had never danced before. Megan, on the other hand, had grown up learning traditional Irish dance. Even with two very different levels of experience, they said their instructor, Victoria, made the process feel easy to understand and comfortable from the beginning.
More Than Just Another Wedding Appointment
What surprised Mike and Megan most was how much they looked forward to their lessons.
Wedding planning can quickly fill a calendar with appointments, decisions and endless little details. Dance lessons became something completely different.
They described them as dedicated “date nights” during one of the busiest periods of their lives.
“No phones, no distractions, just quality time with each other — and Victoria, lol.”
That time together quickly became part of their routine. Once their lessons started, Mike and Megan practiced at home almost every night leading up to the wedding.
Rather than feeling like homework, it became another way to intentionally spend time together while everything else around them felt busy.
There was, however, one move they did not practice at home.
The lift.
According to Mike and Megan, it posed a little too much of a threat to their furniture.
Practice Makes Prepared
By the time their wedding day arrived, the nerves had largely been replaced with confidence.
Their lessons had left them feeling well prepared for the moment they had been working toward, although there was still one important final test to complete.
Before heading onto the dance floor, they practiced their lift one more time in the bridal suite to make sure Megan’s dress would cooperate.
It did.
And all of that practice paid off.
Mike and Megan said they felt prepared when they finally stepped onto the floor, and their guests noticed the difference.
They received plenty of compliments afterward, especially about how much the dance seemed to reflect the connection in their relationship.
Their moms loved it so much that they still watch the video regularly.
For Mike and Megan, that reaction made the moment even more meaningful. Their first dance wasn’t simply a routine they had learned — it looked and felt like the two of them.
A Whole Studio Behind Them
Victoria was Mike and Megan’s primary instructor, but one of their favorite parts of the experience was realizing they had the support of the entire Fred Astaire Shelton team.
They regularly received advice, guidance and friendship from other instructors along the way.
That mattered.
Knowing that so many people were willing to help made them feel even more prepared for the wedding day, and it also made every visit to the studio feel welcoming.
Their experience wasn’t limited to learning choreography from one person. They felt like they had a whole group of people behind them, helping them build something they could feel proud of.
A Dance They Still Look Back On
When asked whether they would recommend wedding dance lessons to other couples, Mike and Megan didn’t hesitate.
Yes.
They still look back fondly on their first dance and the time they spent preparing for it.
It became a special memory from one of the biggest days of their lives, but the experience leading up to it mattered just as much.
They practiced together almost every night. They had uninterrupted time away from screens and wedding planning stress. They laughed, worked through challenges and created something together.
And when the wedding day finally arrived, they were able to step onto the floor knowing they were ready.
For Mike and Megan, dance lessons became more than preparation for a few minutes in front of their guests.
They became part of the wedding story itself.
From meeting on the same college floor at URI, to Mike proposing on the Cliff Walk where their relationship began, to one final lift rehearsal in the bridal suite, their story has always had a way of coming full circle.
We’re so grateful Fred Astaire Dance Studios of Shelton got to be part of one of those chapters.
Congratulations, Mike and Megan!
