Wedding Wednesday:
James & Kate — Learning to Dance, Laugh, and Keep Going

Some couples come into wedding dance lessons with years of dance experience behind them.

James and Kate were not those people.

Neither had really danced before, and they already knew one thing for sure: they did not want their first dance to be three minutes of swaying back and forth.

So they decided to learn.

And somewhere along the way, the dance became one of their favorite parts of wedding planning.

A Sunset Proposal on Cape Cod

James proposed during a trip to Cape Cod at one of their favorite restaurants.

After dinner, the two stepped outside around sunset, overlooking the water. There was no big crowd, no elaborate production, just the two of them in a peaceful setting that already meant something to their relationship.

That was where James asked Kate to marry him.

“It was intimate, peaceful, and such a special moment for the two of us.”

As they look ahead to married life, that same sense of togetherness is what matters most to them.

They are excited to continue growing together and building a life as a team, but they also understand that marriage is made up of much more than the big milestones.

For James and Kate, it is about sharing the everyday moments, continuing to learn about each other, and having fun along the way.

From I Cant Find the Beat” to the Dance Floor

When it came time to think about their first dance, James and Kate knew they needed some help.

James could naturally hear the music.

Kate, in her own words, still jokes that she “can’t find a beat.”

Dance lessons seemed like the perfect way to close that gap and make sure they both felt comfortable and confident by the wedding day.

And as soon as they met their instructor, Stefan, they felt like they were in good hands.

Their favorite part of lessons was how much fun they had while learning something completely new together.

Stefan kept them accountable and challenged them, but he also made the process enjoyable. Rather than becoming another task on the wedding checklist, dance became something they genuinely looked forward to.

And they took the homework seriously.

James and Kate practiced regularly at home, recorded themselves dancing, and even sent videos to Stefan so he could give them feedback between lessons.

Watching themselves back helped them see what needed to be adjusted and where they could improve before the next lesson.

The process became part dance training, part teamwork, and part very entertaining home video review.

Practice, Confidence, and One Small Wardrobe Malfunction

By the time the wedding arrived, James and Kate were surprised by how calm they felt.

They had practiced the routine so many times that they felt prepared.

Then, of course, the wedding day threw them one little surprise.

During the dance, they had a wardrobe malfunction.

But instead of panicking, they could practically hear Stefan in their heads reminding them of the lesson they had learned over and over:

Keep going.

Smile.

Have fun.

So that is exactly what they did.

It also reflected one of the biggest things they learned during the entire process. If someone forgot a step, it was usually an equal mix between the two of them, but they quickly realized that perfection was never the most important part.

The goal was to stay focused, keep moving, smile, and enjoy the moment together.

More Than a First Dance

Looking back, James and Kate say their first dance became much more meaningful than they had expected.

They had spent months learning and practicing together, so finally performing the routine surrounded by their family and friends felt like the culmination of everything they had worked on.

Then came the reaction from the room.

Seeing their guests respond to the dance made every practice session, correction, video recording, and repeat run-through completely worth it.

The finished performance was special, but so was everything that had led to it.

Finding a Community at Fred Astaire Shelton

For James and Kate, one of the best parts of the entire experience was the people.

“Stefan truly became part of our wedding journey and honestly feels like part of our extended family now.”

Their experience at Fred Astaire Dance Studios of Shelton also went beyond private lessons.

They attended group classes, got to know other students and instructors, and found themselves genuinely looking forward to coming into the studio each week.

It became another part of their routine during wedding planning, and one that felt fun rather than stressful.

They also decided not to limit dance lessons to their first dance.

James took lessons with his mom, and Kate took lessons with her dad, so they could prepare their parent dances too.

Those lessons created another unexpected gift before the wedding: dedicated bonding time with their parents.

Would They Recommend It?

Absolutely.

Even if a couple only takes a few lessons, James and Kate say having a plan can make a huge difference.

Knowing what they were going to do on the dance floor allowed them to feel far more relaxed and confident on the wedding day.

But the lessons also gave them something equally valuable during the months leading up to it.

They got to learn together.

They got to laugh together.

They got challenged, practiced, improved, and occasionally forgot steps together.

And ultimately, they created something that belonged to both of them.

That feels fitting for a couple whose favorite idea about marriage is building a life as a team.

From a quiet sunset proposal on Cape Cod to practicing dance videos at home, parent dance lessons, one wedding-day wardrobe malfunction, and a first dance surrounded by everyone they loved, James and Kate embraced the whole experience exactly the way they hope to approach married life:

Together, with a sense of humor, and ready to keep going even when everything is not absolutely perfect.

We are so grateful Fred Astaire Dance Studios of Shelton got to be part of their wedding journey.

Congratulations, James and Kate!
