Hustle
In the late 1960s and 1970s, discotheques—or discos—lit up the entertainment scene across Europe and the U.S. These vibrant venues featured high-energy music, dazzling lights, and state-of-the-art sound systems, quickly becoming the ultimate nightlife destination. Early disco dancing was all about freestyle, with groovy moves reminiscent of pop icons like The Jackson 5. And of course, no disco look was complete without bellbottom pants and those iconic elevator shoes.
In 1973, a game-changing dance began to emerge at The Grand Ballroom. Women started showcasing a simple six-count step, incorporating inside and outside single turns. This new “touch dance” quickly caught the attention of the men, sparking interest and participation. Over time, this unnamed style evolved into what we now call the Hustle—a dance that would become a sensation in nightclubs everywhere.
As the Hustle gained momentum, its style began to shift, particularly in Latin-inspired discos like The Corso and Barney Goo Goo’s. In these spaces, dancers blended traditional mambo, salsa, and cha cha elements into the Hustle, adding intricate turns and rope-like arm movements. This iteration became known as the “Rope Hustle” or “Latin Hustle,” bringing a dynamic, side-by-side flair to the dance floor. Before long, the Hustle wasn’t just a trend—it was a full-blown phenomenon.
By the mid-1970s, the Hustle had become a cornerstone of competitive dance, with professionals adding balletic elegance and acrobatic flair to their performances. It transitioned from a slotted style to a more rotational one, incorporating influences from ballroom, swing, and Latin rhythm dances. The 3-count Hustle (&-1-2-3), made famous by NYC club dancers, set the standard for what became a nationwide movement. Even today, Hustle’s smooth, fast-paced energy makes it a favorite, danced to pop hits that keep the vibe fresh and exciting.
