The Foxtrot

The Foxtrot is one of the most popular and well-known ballroom dances. It has the distinction of looking very easy but being one of the most difficult dances to do well. In 1913, the vaudeville performer Harry Fox did a dance in a musical at the New York Theatre that caught on and became known as the “Fox’s Trot.” It is a graceful dance, using long walking movements and short quick steps to a 4/4 time signature.

Quickstep ballroom dance lessons in morrisville

The Quickstep

The Quickstep, as the name implies, is a lively light-hearted dance. It was started in the 1920s from a combination of Foxtrot, Charleston, Shag, and One-step. Today’s version of the Quickstep has the leader often close his feet, use syncopated steps (hops, skips, and kicks), and engage quarter turns. It is a dynamic dance with much movement on the dance floor. The tempo is brisk since it was developed to be danced with ragtime-era jazz music.

The Tango

The Tango is a dramatic social dance that began in the 1880s in bordellos on the border between Argentina and Uruguay, incorporating influence from both African and European cultures. After 1980, newer versions of the tango developed using an open and elastic embrace that permits the leader to initiate a variety of complex figures while dancing to many types of music such as jazz, techno-infused, and alternative.

The Viennese Waltz

The Viennese Waltz is the original form of the Waltz and is twice as fast as the Waltz (slow waltz). It was the first ballroom dance performed in the closed hold or waltz position. The dancers are constantly rotating by turning either toward the leader’s right or left and then using non-rotating change steps to switch between the direction of rotation.

The Waltz

The Waltz is a gliding dance that evolved in 17th-century Vienna and Bavaria and is one of the five dances in the Standard category of International ballroom dances. Fast versions of the dance are called “Viennese Waltz” while the standard English Waltz is called “Slow Waltz,” or simply Waltz. The Waltz is danced to music in ¾ time with the first beat of a measure strongly accented. Dancers whirl and rotate on the dance floor as part of the Waltz movement.
