The Bolero

The Bolero is a fusion of smooth and sultry Latin movements and sexy bossa nova rhythms. It is a slower version of the Rumba. It has slow, long sweeping side steps and a slight rise and fall creating a smoothness that makes the dance unique among Latin dances. It is often called the Cuban Dance of Love. Originally, it was danced in its classical form to the constant beat of drums.

The Cha Cha

The Cha Cha originated in Cuba by the composer Enrique Jorrin in the early 1950s. The name of the dance was derived from the shuffling sound of the dancers’ feet when they danced two consecutive quick steps on the fourth count of each measure. It is a fun, flirty dance consisting of triple chasses steps (cha cha cha’s) and rock steps. The steps and rhythm are versatile which allows the dance to be done to a variety of musical styles such as Latin pop, Latin rock, and other genres that have been remixed.

The Mambo

The Mambo is a fast and spicy dance characterized by strong Cuban motion, staccato movement, and the expression of rhythm through the body. It is a high-energy dance that has infectious rhythms. It has similarities to the Rumba and the Cha Cha in the complex step pattern. But, like other Latin dances, it has syncopated rhythms and an upbeat tempo.

The Merengue

The Merengue is both a dance and a style of music that originated in the Dominican Republic and, to this day, is still the official music and dance of that area. It began as a rural dance and later became a ballroom dance. It is versatile in that it can be danced either fast or slow and it is a very simple dance, making it a great dance for beginners.

The Paso Doble

The Paso Doble is a spirited, passionate dance that originally was derived from the Flamenco dance in Spain. It is characterized by strong, bold movements and dramatic use of arm and body postures that tell the story of the Spanish bullfight. It is known as one of the fastest Latin dances with the dancers making about 120 to 130 beats/steps per minute.

The Rumba

The Rumba originated as an Afro-Cuban folk dance and grew in popularity in the early 20th century. The basic rumba step is a simple box step: a slow forward or backward step and two quick side steps, with a count of slow-quick-quick, and is one of the most difficult dances. It is best known for the dancers’ subtle side-to-side hip movements with the torso erect. The swaying of the hips has come to be known as the Cuban Motion.

The Samba

The Samba originated in Brazil and was popularized in Western Europe and the United States in the early 1940s. It is characterized by simple forward and backward steps incorporating rocking body movements danced to music in 4/4 time with a syncopated rhythm. Samba music has rhythmic patterns with an emphasis on melody and simple harmonies, using African percussion instruments.

The Salsa

Salsa is a Latin dance associated with the music genre of the same name. It is a mixture of Cuban dances such as mambo, cha cha, and rumba as well as American dances such as swing and tap. Salsa has intricate footwork, rhythmic hip movements, and partner connections. It has an energetic and vibrant style with dancers incorporating spins, turns, and intricate patterns. That being said, the basic steps of quick-quick-slow can be learned by inexperienced and experienced dancers alike.
