Fred Astaire System For Teaching Lessons
At Fred Astaire Norwalk we teach 3 types of lessons. Private, which is one on one instruction. Group, where 8-12 students work with 1 instructor learning the mechanics of a dance. Parties, where 30-40 people come to socialize and dance every Friday night. Each piece of our 3 lesson system for learning work together to help you learn faster and more efficiently than any other method available. Our friendly and encouraging staff will have you feeling comfortable and ready to dance in no time.
Private Lessons: Are scheduled anytime between the hours of 1:00pm and 10:00pm Monday through Friday. Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Norwalk excels at teaching people to dance because of our Private Lesson based programs. Private Lessons are the most valuable lessons, because of their individualized approach. On your private lesson your instructor will introduce new concepts of dancing one on one or as a couple. Having the information presented in this one on one format allows the instructor to focus on your needs and tailor the information to you. Every person learns differently and at their own rate. Private Dance Lessons allow you to move at your own pace without the pressure of a group, and develop a much deeper understanding of movement in a fraction of the time. On your Private Dance Lesson you can feel how each dance is supposed to feel through your teacher’s movement.
Group Lessons: Are prescheduled 45 min classes and are available to view on our calendar . Group Lessons will usually have 8-12 students and 1 instructor. Most Group Classes will be focused on one dance (with the exception of the beginner classes) and are designed to teach the “mechanics” of dancing. Balance, control, rhythm and coordination are especially prevalent in the Group Classes because you’re dancing on your own. You will also have the opportunity in Group Class to learn both the lead and follow part of the step. This is especially helpful to understand what your partner is doing while you’re dancing together. The Beginner Class is designed for brand new students in their first few weeks of dancing.
Practice Parties: are a the practice for the big game! The atmosphere at the Party is similar to what you would see when you go out to use your dancing. Wether you’re dancing at a wedding reception, at a salsa club, a black tie gala, or specifically at a ballroom dancing event you will need to know how to navigate a floor. The party gives the perfect opportunity for you to…
Practice your moves with different people ( leading and following).
Practice dancing with other people on the floor (floor craft i.e.. navigation).
Socialize with other people (builds confidence and community).
Practice putting steps together consecutively to a whole song (blending and ad libbing).
just to name a few.
Together these three types of lessons make up our Fred Astaire System for Learning. Our system had been proven to teach you how to dance better and in less time than any other system available. Paired with our exclusive Fred Astaire Dance Studio Syllabus you will be on the floor and having fun in no time!

A friend of mine invited me to the dance studio for bring a friend night. I thought I would go and just check it out. I did not have intentions on becoming a member. That quickly changed when I met Gina and her staff at Fred Astaire’s in Norwalk. I was placed with a professional dancer, who is an extraordinary teacher. I have so much fun each and every time I go to the studio. The one on one lessons are fantastic as you get great personalized attention on learning new dances, the group classes are small and are held at different levels so you can select which one you want to go to, and the Friday dance practice parties are so fun that I plan all of my social events around them. I could not ask for a better experience.

Our unique teaching system includes a Three Tiered Method of regularly scheduled private instruction as well as group lessons and practice lessons:
Private instruction, with one or more key teachers, gives you the specialized and personalized attention necessary to look and feel great on the dance floor, while developing the ability to lead or follow any partner. This is where we perfect and polish your dancing while moving at your own pace.
Group lessons are also a necessary part of instruction because this is where patterns, technique, and style are learned. Equally important, group lessons provide you with the opportunity to meet other students with similar dancing goals, develop balance, and learn the mechanics of dancing.
Practice lessons are a great practical application of what you are learning in your program because they complete the lesson information taught in our private and group lessons. Learning is one thing, but making the material work in a live setting while dancing with different people is quite another. The practice lesson will put everything together as well as aid in music identification and help you to learn not to run into other people on the dance floor. You can meet other students and practice your leading and following skills in a fun, relaxed environment! Teachers can tailor their private lessons based on how they see their students progressing.
Our dance instructors are highly skilled and trained to help you learn using the unique Fred Astaire Method. Hailing from around the world, our teachers are actively competing, award-winning professionals and gifted educators. Many of our teachers have degrees in the fine arts and all have passed rigorous exams given by the Imperial Society of the Teachers of Dance and/or the Fred Astaire Curriculum certification.
Our Trophy System
We offer the Fred Astaire Trophy System as an easy way for you to track your progress while you enjoy dancing! Our Beginner and Social Foundation Programs teach newer students the step patterns and techniques to move around the dance floor. From there, a student can progress to either Social Bronze or Advanced Bronze. The main goal of either Bronze level is to get our students to the point where they can dance on any size dance floor, to any music, with any partner and feel comfortable and confident. The Social Bronze focuses more on social dancing and the Advanced Bronze is for students looking to progress beyond “just getting by”. From there, our students can move onto the Silver level and then all the way to the Gold!
Our dance curriculum covers the full range of American, Latin-American, International Style, and Exhibition/Theatre Arts dances. World famous dance champions and registered judges on the Fred Astaire National Dance Board constantly study and review our curriculum to make sure that only the finest, up-to-date programs are being offered to our students.
Give the Gift of Dance, our gift certificates are a great way to introduce that special someone in your life to the world of Ballroom and Latin dancing. They are great for Holidays, Birthdays, Mother’s Day, Engagements, Anniversaries, or simply just because!
The best part is that the cost is the same for a single or a couple so you can come along with the person you are giving it to!
You can purchase a gift certificate of any denomination you choose. We have a special introductory offer that will take you through the most popular styles of Ballroom Dance, including Swing, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha Cha and Waltz.
