The Waltz, a timeless dance with origins tracing back over 400 years, began as a country folk dance in Bavaria. Its formal debut in society occurred in 1812 when it graced English ballrooms. Originally a round dance known as the Volte during the 16th century, it first gained prominence in Italy before spreading to France and Germany, paving the way for what we now celebrate as the Waltz.

From Galop to Redowa, Boston to Hop Waltz, the Waltz has accumulated many names over the years. When it first appeared in grand ballrooms in the early 19th century, it sparked controversy. The sight of a man grasping a woman’s waist left bystanders aghast, with many finding it improper for impressionable young girls to witness. Despite its rocky reception, the Waltz gradually gained favor among European aristocrats and eventually reached the United States by 1840. The Waltz came ashore in America, free to flourish beyond the boundaries of European etiquette. Amidst the rowdy outbreaks of ragtime, this tasteful dance retained its position as a favorite pastime.

In 1910, as ragtime music surged in popularity, simpler walking dances like the Foxtrot began to overshadow the Waltz. However, its charm endured as composers began creating slower Waltz compositions by the late 19th century. By the 1920s, the Waltz evolved into three distinct tempos:
