Frequently Asked Questions

Learning how to ballroom dance is very similar to learning how to golf or play a musical instrument.  It all depends on how good you want to be and how much effort you are willing to put towards it.  That being said, our average students feel they can “Hold Their Own” in any social dances in as few as a couple of weeks, and feel quite confident after only a few months.

Fred Astaire Dance Studios offer a special Introductory Program for all our new students. Contact the studio location nearest you to make an appointment for your first lesson. Lesson times vary by studio location.

No.  Our instructors are trained to teach both couples and individuals.  In fact, singles learn significantly faster due to our kinesthetic method of teaching (learning through feeling).  The instructor will be your dance partner as well as teach you how to dance.  Through your instructor’s lead or follow, you will feel how to dance properly.

Our instructors are skilled in all aspects of partnership dancing.  Whether you are interested in just having fun at the next Social Dance.  Or maybe you want to dust off your cowboy boots for Country Western dancing.  From choreographed wedding dances to competitive Ballroom and Latin dancing, Fred Astaire is the right partner for you!

We offer all partnership dances, from waltz, tango, cha-cha, and salsa, to country western, swing and club dancing. We can help you with your wedding dance, all of your social dance needs, and any dance done with a partner.

Both lesson types are 40 minutes long and take place in the same ballroom.  Private instruction provides each student with personalized attention.  This allows us to fulfill each student’s specific needs.  Private lessons can be scheduled at your convenience.  In addition, they can highlight all three styles of learning: Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic!

Group lessons provide an efficient way of learning elements and steps.  1 teacher for multiple students means you will be dancing with another student or on your own.  This provides the benefit of self-reliance.  Group lessons also provide an opportunity to meet other students with similar dancing goals.

Even though we specialize in Private Instruction, we find that a healthy balance of both provides the best learning experience.

No. We teach both singles and couples here at Fred Astaire Dance Studios. If you come in as one of our single students, your instructor will be your partner for your private lessons, and our groups and practice sessions will provide plenty of opportunity to meet other students with the same interests and goals.

We recommend to wear whatever you would wear to go out dancing.  Classy yet comfortable.  Well fitting dress shoes with a leather sole is usually the best.  If wearing heels, make sure the height is less than 2.5 inches.  Athletic shoes, sandals, sling-backs and boots (unless dancing Country Western) are discouraged.

You don’t have to sign a contract but you do have to sign a Student Lesson Agreement.  even though they sound the same, they are quite different.  Rest assured that you will never have to pay for any unused lessons, and you can stop taking lessons at any time.  All that we expect is that you pay for the lessons that you have used at any given moment.  In fact, if you would rather pay per lesson, no problem!

The purpose of our Student Agreements is to protect the student, the studio, and the Fred Astaire Franchised Dance Studios Worldwide.  In the unlikely event that we go out of business, the Student Agreement gives our students a definite way to get a refund from either the Studio, the Area Franchisor or Fred Astaire Dance Studios corporate office.

Private lessons consist of one student or a couple working with one or two instructors. Private instruction is tailored to your personal needs. Learning at your own pace is the optimum method of comprehension and that’s what private instruction enforces.
One common misconception about private lessons is that they take place in seclusion. On the contrary, multiple private lessons are often going on at the same time in our ballroom. Our students have found that learning in this environment gives them an advantage in social dance settings.
Private lessons are by appointment only, and may be scheduled during each studio’s business hours by calling the studio’s main number.

Dancing – it’s not just for weddings anymore.  With the success of ABC’s long running show Dancing with the Stars and FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance, ballroom dancing no longer relegated to middle school gymnasiums.  We offer weekly social dance parties which we aim to provide the best environment for social dancing.

Anywhere there is live music generally is a great place to dance.  Many restaurants and lounges have bands, especially during the holidays.  If that is not your scene, try this: bring a phone or MP3 player filled with your favorite dance music and surprise your partner at your next campfire.  Talk about Romantic!

Our practice sessions take place in the studio and prepare you for dancing socially. They allow you to apply material learned in your lessons without the pressure of the public eye upon you. Our students attend to have fun, learn, and dance! At our practice sessions, we dim the lights, supply the music, and have a fabulous time in a party type atmosphere. Students have the opportunity to dance and meet other students, as well as the other instructors.

Wear something comfortable that won’t inhibit movement. Some of our students come straight from work and others come for their lessons dressed casual. Of course, comfortable shoes are recommended! We suggest a pair of leather-soled shoes for gentlemen and a shoe with a back for the ladies similar to what you would wear to go out dancing. Athletic shoes don’t work well on the ballroom floor-they stick and make it difficult to move your feet!

No. Our instructors are highly qualified and participate in ongoing training. In addition, our progressive system of instruction and our unique trophy system make it easy to learn. It will take time to learn the various dances and a repertoire of steps. However, the learning is easy and fun. A steady approach with periodic practice will produce visible results in a short period. We highly encourage you to keep your lessons close together. You will progress more quickly, and make your experience more valuable to you.
